24 Hours After 'fun Run' Coby Very Sore

I waited 24 hours before posting because Coby displayed a soreness in his right front paw months ago and it went away. The vet had checked him when this first occurred (months ago), no broken bones. I was hoping that this recurrence of the same symptoms was the same and would disappear within hours. Unfortunately Coby is still having major problems walking. I can't feel anything broken....I'll take him to the vet, but any advice for now????? Anything I can give him to ease the pain?

Coby is walking normally today. Thank you all sooo much for helping me when I was panicking!

Any chance it is arthritis? I know when I over do it I hurt all over for about a week. It can't be much different for our pups. How about a cool compress? You can wrap some frozen peas or ice on with an ace wrap.

Thanks, greytkidsmom. I will attempt to see if that works...Daddy Don and I had to carry him outside so that he could go to the bathroom.

Poor pupper. I always hate to see mine like that. I would try the cold compress for now too until you can make sure there isn't anything broken. I hope he feels better soon.

Is there swelling? Maybe take him to the vet for an x-ray just to check. Hope it's nothing.

Bonnie like most of our hounds Coby is not in the top physical shape he was when he was racing. He has become a couch potato and just like us when he suddenly participates in a physical activity he is no longer used to he will be sore. The last time I let Bill participate in a lure course he only ran once and it took him 2 weeks to recover, it took Sheana a few days. The vet told me to give them a full strength buffered aspirin. He would probably enjoy a bit of a massage from his mommy as well. I am sure kisses from his lubberlee wife couldn't hurt either.

Feel better Coby Bare

Thanks! Poor Coby has seen his last run....:(

The only runs my gang participate in anymore are short clocked hustles. They are not in the shape they need to be in do the more strenuous runs.

Hugs to your fella :blush

Just out of curiosity...what kind of fun run? A playgroup type thing, or was there a lure involved?

How old is Coby?

If a lure was involved, I would concur that most owners are not inclinded to keep their dogs in that kind of shape (they usually take "couch potato" WAY to literally), although I believe you can keep a healthy greyhound in good enough shape to take a run at a lure once in a while.

If it wasn't a lure chasing event, and Coby is not too old...I certainly wouldn't write off fun runs. Just get him in good shape and let him have fun!

Ok...here's my thoughts on the injury....

I have found that if its muscule related it is usually really tender after they have been laying around and first get up to move. It usually loosens up with walking. Same for ligaments unless its a complete tear. If the pain is consistent then I would think more towards a fracture. I'm no vet, but after coursing my dog for 2 years and interrogating my vet mercilessly :blush thats what my experience has been. Also if its a sprained toe...it can take WEEKS to heal. The problem being that you'll think the toe is fine after a week or so of them not limping, and have them play in a playgroup, and they reinjure it. So its back to square one.

Wow! Thanks for sharing all those details. Coby was 7 in March. He was at the Greyhound Expo at Wonderland and ran late Friday afternoon. He was absolutely fine all night Friday. Saturday he was very quiet, and by Saturday night was almost unable to walk...Today he is staying in his bed, not wanting to put pressure on his paws..especially his right paw. He won't be playing in a play group for months....

Hokiebuck - it was the fun run at Wonderland. The dogs get to break from the box and run to the first turn. No lure.

Bonnie - see if there is any swelling on the underside of the wrist. Push the stopper pad up and down and see if you get a reaction and feel the tendons that run down through the back of the paw - he could have bowed a tendon. If it's a chronic injury, you'll see thickening of the superficial digital flexor tendon (you may have to wet the back of both feet to be able to see clearly), if it's acute, you'll see swelling.

All is well today. Coby is walking normally and is very happy. Thank you all for answering my call for help!

It is so easy to think the worst when we see our babies not feeling well. I am glad he is feeling better.

How do you stop them from running. Darrel runs and broke off a nail (bloody mess) broke another nail..no blood, managed to gorge out a piece between his toes, and I can't even count the many bruises. So, how do you stop them...this is in my small suburban backyard.
