Hubcitypam
One of my adopters is retired and on a fixed income. Her 10 year old grey has become ill and after a million tests they still can't figure out what is wrong. They said the next step was exploratory surgery but she doesn't want to do that. He is on i/d but is is putting a pretty serious dent in her pocketbook. Is there something she can cook herself that could sub?
Batmom
Rice, cooked with extra water so it's very soft; add some cooked meat -- partially defatted beef works well, can use chicken but it's awfully low in fat so you'd need to add some; add a scrambled egg, do several and just keep refrig'ed for next mealtime; add a multivitamin. Et voila, you're done. You might have to help her figure out how much to give. USDA nutrient database is useful for finding calories for basic ingredients, altho the rice bag will have that info on it too. Depending on how big he is, he probably wants at least 1200 calories a day, likely @ 1600. P.S. Dunno if you can get it down there but Evanger's has some 100% meat basic canned foods. Up here they run @ .99 per can. Not $0 but better than I/D. Good addition for the meat part of the meal.
