Guest nursenearlyther
Shadow had his first dental today and I am almost certain he has a tummy ache (he vomited). Is this a common reaction to the procedure? Any advice on what to do for his tummy... the vet said he should be able to tolerate a normal diet. TIA, Brenda
Guest greytkidsmom
It could be a reaction to the anesthesia medication or any pain medications the vet may have given. If an antibiotic was given, it could be that too. Try brown rice and boiled chicken in small frequent meals and make sure he is getting enough fluids. Vomiting once shouldn't be too worrisome. If he doesn't stop, then it is time to call the vet.
NevadasMom
Yup..........anesthesia is probably the culprit. If he is still queezie try just giving him ice cubes to lick. I'd wait till the morning to feed him a bland diet. He should be fine then. Guest Cris_M
I would call the vet and ask that a notation be put on Shadow's chart regarding his upset stomach. There may be something that could be done differently next time to avoid this side effect. Call rather than just mentioning it next time is because, if your dog is hurt and needs treatment, you are likely to forget it. Or, at least, I would. My collie always had an upset tummy after a dental. (They are soooooo stomach sensitive.) He'd try to drink a lot when he got home, and then would throw up. After the first time this happened, I made sure he only got maybe 1/4 cup of water (or crushed ice) to start out, and wait an hour or so to give him a little more. My vet told me not to feed either of my dogs (collie & grey) till morning. I only gave a very small amount of food in the morning, and if they kept it down, in about 2 hrs. I'd give a little more. After the first full day home, and feeding little bits at a time, everyone did fine. Good luck. I hope Shadow's doing better today.
Guest VelvetEars
It can also be due to swallowing blood if he had teeth pulled. They may have been oozing and swallowing it can upset the stomach as well. (I speak from experience with my own teeth being pulled.)
