Guest krisandzoo
This morning while Bentley was eating his breakfast I heard a funny cough. I went to him and notcied he was doing a silent gag/cough and was having trouble getting air. I realized I have NO clue how to give the heimlich to a large breed dog. Thankfully a few pats and some attempts on his part to cough got whatever was lodged moving again. Talk about scary!!! I've been meaning to take a doggy first aid class and I think now is a good time to sign up. I just wanted to post to remind others (especially those with chow hounds!) that it is so important to know. Here's a quick overview http://www.petplace.com/dogs/heimlich-for-...-dog/page1.aspx Also, find a location nearby to learn firstaid http://www.redcross.org/services/hss/courses/pfachapter.html I hope no one else has to have a reminder like mine (or worse) to know why this is important. Guest shelbygirl07
Been there on a small dog. Never had to on Shelby, though. THank you for posting this. It is vital information to post on your fridge. I have an indepth first aid binder that they gave me when I became a Red Cross Pet First Aid Instructor. It shows you everything. Let me know if you want a copy of it i can copy it and send it to you.

It is something that is catching on like wild fire but they don't have many people signing up to be instructors and that's where the lack of classes come in. I paid $90 to take the class and get my certification to teach it compared to the $15-30 ($30 to include the first aid book if purchased through them when you take the class) to just take it. We were the first class for instructor training in Central Mass.. You should check with the local chapter of your Red Cross www.redcross.org and check the web site. Each of the local chapters has their own website. If you don't see it there, it doesn't mean they don't offer it so call them and find out. They are notoriously slow at updating their website....
