Guest vtmom
We might be moving to Kissimmee in a few months. I was wondering if there is a "greyhound community" down there? Are there any active rescues to volunteer at? Although we have two greys we still like to bring donations when we can and walk dogs, ect. Also I was looking over the list of grey friendly vets but did not see any listed in that area, do you know of any? Any cool things to do with your greys in that area? Come on spill the beans and let me know how living with greys in FL will be. My pups love to lay in the yard here in Vermont and "suntan" so they are very excited to live in a place where you can sun tan all year
Guest Stretchy
I'm about 2 hours away (tampa bay area) and there are plenty of rescue groups around here. I'm sure there will be some in Orlando as well. One of the perks about being in FL is that it is never too cold to take the dogs for a walk!
Guest greyhound1
I live in the Palm Bay area. But we do get way to hot to let them lay outside.
Guest JudiK
Hi - I live in York, PA. I foster for a group out of Orlando. There are a lot of groups in Orlando - GPA Orlando, Gold Coast, Greyhound Ranch and God's Greyts... I may have missed some. PM me if you want to chat about my friends in Orlando. There are a lot of active people down there because there is a track in Orlando.
Guest trevdog
Your greys will have to get acclimated to the heat. We got Dallas as a pup from W VA, her first summer here she wouldn't even go outside to potty unless you coaxed her.
Guest argolola
We are two hours away, and lots of grey groups in Florida. My girl loves to lay in the sun, but we monitor her and don't let her stay out for very long. Welcome in advance.
fsugrad
Hi, I'm in Gainesville, which is 2 hours north of the Orlando area. Here is a link to Greyhound Pets of America's Orlando chapter. http://www.greyhoundpetsorlando.org/ I was born in FL and have lived here my whole life...you do need to give yourself time to get used to the heat. The summers, particularly in the landlocked parts of the state (such as Orlando and Gainesville, to name 2!) are brutal. "Summer" = May through mid October, by the way. They do take a while to get used to, so make sure that you and your pups acclimate yourselves slowly, and plan on everyone drinking a lot more water to keep you and your pups hydrated, especially during outdoor activities. cello
I live in the Orlando area. I am a volunteer for GPA-Greater Orlando. We have a kennel facility with approximately 54 dogs, plus another 30 or so out in foster care. We are ALWAYS looking for volunteers, so any help would be sincerely appreciated. Guest vtmom
Oh good I am glad to hear that when we get settled in we can get out and help some more hounds I will definatly be careful with the heat. I am not a big fan of hot days. Here in VT when it is 90 and the air is so humid and thick it is like jello I turn into a hermit and make everyone stay inside and relax. I am sure I will do the same there, I am a delicate flower and I might wilt
Guest gpagreys
Just remember that life in Florida includes constant air conditioning! Any of the wonderful adoption groups can stear you to a bevy of greyt vets.....the area is thick with them and there are a number of fabulous specialists there also.
