Fritz Has Gained Weight

Recommended Posts

Fritz has put on about 6 lbs. in the past couple of months...I did switch their food a while back, but none of the other dogs have experienced any weight gain...

I'm starting to wonder if he's got a thyroid problem...he has a very thick coat of fur and he is shedding like a mad man, but I can't say that's uncommon for him, he's just always been that way. He doesn't show any other symptoms, he's always been quite a lazy lover boy, but he is excitable when appropriate, so, anyway, I'm not really seeing any symptoms from him other than the sudden weight gain. He's not getting any extra treats or anything...

Could this be anything else? Maybe I should try reducing the amount of food I give him at mealtimes? Depending on your suggestions, I might just have a full thyroid panel done on him to get a definitive answer. Ace (his littermate sister) was diagnosed as low thyroid a few years ago and has been on meds for a while. She's also due for a recheck, and after reading some greyhound specific thyroid information, I am wondering if she could have her dosage tapered.

If you're not seeing any symptoms, I would probably cut his food back a bit and see how he does in the next month or two. Mine were less active this last winter and I did have to cut them back a smidge. Foods go thru dogs differently, too.

Check the fat content of the food you're using now. If it's higher than what you were using that could cause him to gain weight. Since there seems to be no other symptoms you might try cutting back his food. Mine are shedding but then it's gotten warmer!

All three of my boys gained 4 pounds over the winter. We had such terrible cold, snow and ice here in Wisconsin, they just weren't getting enough exercise. They seem to be adjusting their own intake of food the last month or two and cutting down, some since it's gotten warmer. Plus, with the nicer weather, all of us will be getting more exercise! I don't think I would rule out a trip to the vet with Fritz thought. If nothing else, just have a CBC and chem panel done, just to make sure everything is in the proper working order. And then ask the vet if he/she thinks a thyroid test might be in order.
