Guest got2now
I took the pups in for their shot updates Monday morning, and my 5 year old girl got the DHLPP vaccination and a bordetello. She's been choking like something is stuck in her throat ever since. Her temp is normal, and her appetite is good. The vet yesterday said she was just having a reaction to the bordetello vaccine - a slight kennel cough - like when we get a flu vaccine and get a touch of the flu. She looks at me like something is wrong. I know that sounds nuts, but she really has this look. I just worry a lot and can't find much info about this . Has anyone had this experience? Batmom
Call your vet back and ask about some antibiotics and a cough suppressant to make your pup (and you) more comfortable. Happened to a dog of my mom's years ago. Our vets say they've seldom had it happen these days, but "seldom" sure isn't "never." Hugs to your pupper. Batmom
P.S. Your vet might feel the antibiotics aren't necessary based on your pup's general health, etc., but it doesn't hurt to ask, and I'd push for the cough suppressant. Cough suppressant may have a little prednisone in it, so you might see a little extra drinking and peeing for first day or three of use -- not as bad as if you were giving prednisone on its own, tho. Guest GreyDogsRule
One of my angel girlies always got a cough after having Bordetella vaccine. It would usually last for a few weeks. Our vet told us to let him know if the cough got worse, but otherwise she will stop coughing over time. We quit giving her the vaccine which meant she could not be boarded so we would have people come stay with her when we had to go out of town. This was seven or eight years ago so maybe the vaccine is better now, but obviously some hounds are still sensitive to it. Good luck with your sweet girl hound. Guest Spencers_Greyt
I have never heard of such a thing! Getting a touch of kennel cough from vaccine! Mine have gotten it for years and years and nothing like that happened. I would take your dog into the vet and make them look down the throat to make sure nothing is wrong there. NeylasMom
I have never heard of such a thing! It happens. My friend's dog got it after he was vaccinated each time. After his second round of it, she opted to no longer vaccinate him for it. I don't board my dogs so my dogs aren't vaccinated for it either. It's worth re-evaluating why you're vaccinating as it may happen again.
