Guest jonah305
Is this normal? Our Sammie has what appears to be a new nail pushing through and forcing the "old" one off. I've seen and heard of this with cats, but not dogs. The old nail is now sitting at a pretty sharp angle compared to the other nails on the foot, which it was not doing before. The only thing I can think of that might be related is a few months ago we had her nails trimmed down into the quick (forget what this is called) while she was under getting her teeth cleaned. Any thoughts on this? Anything we should worry about? Thanks, Johnnie, Bill, Sammie and Kissie I've attached a picture of the nail.
Guest lauri
Miles' grew back in the same way after catching it in the kitchen cabinet and ripping it out. In fact NOW he catches it a lot and it's been ripped out at least 4 times. I'm just keepimg it short now. I was actually hpoing it wouldn't grow back...but. Guest jonah305
I'm wondering if she did catch it on something. I haven't seen it yet personally because I'm out of town, but Bill did say that it happened today. I'm glad to hear the Miles' did grow back. Unfortunately, I let them get somewhat long again after having them clipped down, but you've given be good reason to renew my desire to keep them as short as possible! --Johnnie
feemandvm
He tore the nail... you'll likely need to get that cut off os it doesn't hurt. Watch the other nails closely... sometimes things like SLO can start this way but random bad luck and trauma is far and away hte most common cause. Guest jonah305
i was thinking SLO, but now that i've returned home and had a chance to look at it in person, they are definitely torn nails. she did it to one nail on each of the front paws. far left on both. makes me think she took a turn too sharp or something. we're going in this week to have the torn top halves cut off and get an antibiotic since her quick was (and still is) exposed. i will keep an eye on the other nails. she looks like she's got a couple of others that are candidates for this to happen to. thanks!
