RobinM
Beau had his dental Thursday- 4 days ago. They did his nails and cleaned his ears while under. DH noticed that when he did scritches behind his ear- he would yelp. Beau is my screamer, but he usually doesn't scream to hear himself. When I rubbed his ears- he didn't until tonight when I came home from work. I examined both ears inside and out to the best of my ability. No scrapes, cuts, slits etc. The inside is not red or inflammed. I can't imagine what this is. If this is still happening tomorrow- 5 days post op, I will have to bring him in... again. any ideas? Guest charmsmom
I wonder if they just dug too deep when they cleaned his ears or if they left a piece of cotton or something in there. I clean my own dogs' ears with no problem, but I don't have screamers, either.
Guest JudiK
Well - this isn't going to be any help at all. But - being an old horse-woman, I have a habit of gently pulling ears when I am sitting on the sofa watching TV. Gently pulling horse ears releases endorphins and puts them in a trance... most of my greys like it, but sometimes Bookie screeches. Not always, just sometimes... so - I'm watching to see what others have to say about this. See - I told you that it wouldn't be helpful. Missilesmom
Missile loves his ears scratched. One day a few weeks ago I was rubbing his head and ears and he screeched. I looked in the ear to find it pretty red. Trip to the vets office revealed bacterial and yeast infection. Maybe something is brewing for your greyt?? Quote BABY, HE WAS BORN TO RUN! Guest IrskasMom
My Morty when he sits and then scratches with his Hindlegs his Ears yelps to , but he does this all the time. I just thought his Nails hurt his Ears and if it would hurt to bad , he wouldn't do it.
Guest Heath_Bar
I'm an ear grabber and about 98% of the time Heath is fine with it. Every once and a while he'll let out a yelp without reason. Ears are clean, no reddening, nothing odd. I'm not worried - must just be the odd way I stroke in those few incidents that he doesn't like. RobinM
Because he does not appear to be in any obvious discomfort, I will wait till Wednesday at which time I have an appointment in the evening. If it worsens, they will take me tomorrow. Guest boni923
Sabot was super-sensistive when we got him. Now he seems to like it, just not like my girl, Diane.

Hawthorn
The only time mine have yelped is when they have an infection brewing. If the infection is mild, you're not necessarily going to see any redness or discharge. A while back I took Sunny to the vet because he'd yelped twice, once when I accidentally touched his ear and once when he was scratching his ear with his paw. There was no redness or discharge to see but the vet said he had a mild infection and a course of antibiotic drops completely sorted him out. In your case though, I suppose it could be the cleaning process which has bruised the skin a little or maybe even the cleaning solution they used which has irritated the skin? Hope he feels better soon. Quote When a relationship of love is disrupted, the relationship does not cease. The love continues; therefore, the relationship continues. Guest Cris_M
He may have a little residual bruising from the cleaning process. I hope he feels better soon. I think Enna may be on to something. I rub Duncan's ears all the time. Usually he just has eargasms but every once in a while, he yelps. With him, it doesn't mean anything sinister like an ear infection -- just Mom being a bit careless or a slight tender spot from all the napping. I hope the same for your guy. LaFlaca
I hate to be a harbinger of doom but, when my Ridgeback, Champion, began yelping when I touched his ears it turned out to be a brain tumor. If the yelping continues, please, please have it checked out carefully. Guest grey_dreams
If they used fluid cleaner for his ears, maybe they didn't get all of it sponged out, and so now it's sort-of covering the ear drum and causing a pressure differential on the 2 sides of the membrane. Like what happens when you go up/down in an airplane during pressurization/depressurization. You know how much that can hurt! Hopefully it will resolve itself but otherwise hopefully the vet will be able to help. for Beau. eta: Just remembered that you can also get this kind of pressure differential when you get water deep in your ear canal when you dive or stay underwater too long. So maybe it is from the residual cleaning fluid in the ear canal. Edited May 13, 2008 by grey_dreams
Guest ss556
Alan has always been sensitive with his ears, one wrong move and he has yelped. I just know how to scritch him now.
Guest CyndiW
When we adopted a 12.5 year very gentle boy last fall, he would yelp and sort of snap when I even bumped his ears. They looked fine and didn't smell and our vet thought it was his teeth instead. However, I finally convinced her to at least test them and sure enough, there was bacteria and yeast. After a couple of weeks of drops, he hasn't had any more discomfort.
Guest sheila
I had one grey that often yelped when his ears were rubbed 'the wrong way'. It seemed to bother him more if someone was rubbing from under his ears. If his ears were rubbed from the top down, no problem. But when rubbed from under the ear in an upwards motion he would yelp. I had heard once that sometimes a trainers at tracks would yank the muzzles off forcefully after a race and would cause some cartilege damage. Since the dog I am speaking of had been a very prolific racer this seemed to make sense.
