Guest Amy_Bee
This morning Gretchen had a "Big D" accident, so I took her out quickly and she emptied out. I noticed that there was a tiny bit of blood in one "batch." Now, I know exactly why she had the Big D. I gave her a small rawhide yesterday and then we ended up getting her nails clipped, after which she always gets a turkey neck. On top of that, she had her regular dinner. I just wasn't thinking. But should I be worried about the blood? It's not a lot. Just a tiny bit.
Guest Winterwish
It could be from the strain of having the big D. When you say a tiny bit,is it let's say,the size of a dime? The way you describe it,it sounds like it may be from straining and irritation intestinally. Also,if that batch that had blood in it was from the most recent poop,it's good to be watching to see if it continues. --which I totally know you are anyway! I hope Gretchen feels better very soon, Edited April 25, 2008 by Winterwish

I hope Gretchen feels better very soon, Yes, it's just a bit. I'm always watching because I have her on the leash every time (as opposed to letting her into a yard). She's alert and clearly upset that she can't eat, so I take that as a good sign.
Guest Ola
Most of the time the blood that accompanies big D is just due to the irritation in the stomach and the straining. If it's bright red blood it means that it's coming from the end of the digestive tract, which is better than dark (i.e. digested) blood. Hopefully just a fast and small meal after will make everything better. Make sure she is drinking to avoid the dehydration that can sometimes accompany a lot of big D. Guest longdogs
As Ola says, it's not uncommon for there to be a little blood. If there is enough blood to stain everything, and it keeps happening, a trip to the vet is in order. Usually it needs some antibiotics to clear an infection.
