Bald Butt!

I've had my Grey since Jan.- and he's had a bald butt since day one! In March his hair seemed to be growing back, but then it seems like it is bald again. I heard flax seed oil could help with this- is this true? Any other supplements that I should be giving him?

Thanks!

I've has Soul since 11/06 and he's still bald :lol

I was using fish oil with no results. He's now on Grizzly Salmon Oil and has a few, tiny whisps of fur growing in.

Some butts are bald and stay that way and some are fuzzy and remain that way. I have 4 dogs. 1 has a totally bald hiney and thighs no matter what we give him as supplements. Try rogaine (just kidding! ;) )

You know, shortly after we got Pop (who had a hairy butt at first), he lost all his hair on his butt. His foster mom said to try rubbing Vit E oil on it, which we did and his hair grew back, but it doesn't work for every dog. To make him stand still, we'd rub it on while he was eating so his mind would be on something else...then he would try to lick it off if you weren't watching and he did get some off, but it did come back in...the oil is kinda messy, but Pop had a hairy butt again...now he just has 2 tiny circles without hair on his butt

BTW, on a side note, and I'm not saying this is true of all dogs as some will have bald butts no matter what you do, I was talking to someone else who put their dog on thyroid meds (dog was tested) and the hair grew back on the dog's butt...not saying this is the case with yours, just something we had talked about.

Mayhem had a bald butt too and his took a while to grow hair (although it did eventually). I prefer fish oil capsules to flax as the Omega 3 in them is easier to absorb by dogs (that's the main reason you'd feed either). Also, flax frequently causes allergic reactions, although if your pup is allergic to fish oil it may be a better alternative.

Agreed. Chloe's tush was totally bald when she came to live with us and she was/is hypothyroid. Once she started on the meds, her tush has regrown her butt hair 80%.

And on the flip side, Soul's thyroid was tested, it is fine, and he's still almost completley bald

I love to pat that baldy bum :P

Spencer has had a bald butt since the day I got him, 4.5 years ago. Have your Grey's thyroid checked because that could be causing the problem. Other than that, nothing has helped Spencer to get hair.

True, it might not work for everyone! However, I would recommend Grizzly Salmon Oil, since you haven't had your boy that long. It might help. We adopted Merlin in Jan. 07, and it took MONTHS before he grew hair on his bald butt! We used a different kind of fish oil, and eventually it worked (even before we switched to GSO)... but I do really like this stuff as his coat is even softer now. Mary Jo (BlackandBrindle) recently posted before and after pictures of her boy Spud (as in, before and after Grizzly Salmon Oil).

Is it ok for the dog to lick the Vit E oil? I want to try it b/c I have had my Maddie tested twice for Thyroid problems but she comes back normal every time. I give her Omega 3 fish oils and still no differnece. I actually think she is loosing more hair. I would like to try the Vit E oil. Thanks

Yes, that should be fine. Some people supplement with Vit E oil so a little lick shouldn't hurt.

My girl has been on meds for thyroid for quite a while and still has a bald butt. I think some just stay that way. But I love my little "Baboon Butt"!

There's no correlation between low thyroid and bald-buttedness in greyhounds -- someone scientific, I forget who, studied that. (For real :lol .) A dog on thyroid supplements is apt to be hairier, tho.

Zema, who has rather high thyroid for a greyhound, has a nice fuzzy butt in winter. In summer, it's bald as a cue-ball. And probably cooler, too :lol . She has been home for 7.5 years now.
