Abnormal Behavior...

Coda was acting so strange that I actually took him to the e-vet. He got up and staggered over to me and followed me into the bathroom and laid on the bath mat while I showered, which he never does. Then I filled his food and water bowl and he didn't want anything to do with it!! So then I got really worried, he never refuses food. So I called the e-vet and decided to bring him in. He couldn't even walk, he was staggering everywhere, and he'd lay down if I didn't force him to stand. I had to CARRY him down stairs. But, we get to the evet and he acted FINE. They couldn't find anything wrong with him.

A little background, last night he drank some water and afterwards he had the hiccups (its the best way I can think of to describe the behavior)....

He poops and pees normally....

Any ideas?

If I think there's an odd behavior that might be hard to reproduce in front of the vet, I try to grab my camera and get a short video of it (tip for the future ;) ). Is it possible he had a seizure? That's the only thing coming to mind...I'll be interested to read the replies.

Thanks for the tip! The vet recommended the same thing. I felt like a dunce for not thinking of it, but at the same time I didn't expect him to be well when we got to the vet!

It may have been a petite mal/focal seizure. He would still be able to function, just not all the way there and not functioning well. He would also recover quickly and you'd never even know he had one if you hadn't witnessed it. I'd keep an eye out and see if he does it again. Write down when and how long the "episode" lasts so you can give a detailed list to your vet.

The above suggestions are very good. So many possibilities come to mind but your description reminds me a bit of my dog who had internal bleeds from tumors that caused extreme weakness & inappetance that would resolve fairly quickly. Were his gums pale? Did the vet check for signs of anemia? If it happens again be sure to check capillary refill by pressing on the gums to see how fast the color comes back. If gums are very pale or color is slow to return after pressure, get your pup to the vet ASAP. Would like to stress that some orthopedic or neurological problems as mentioned above seems more likely so don't panic. Hopefully it will be a one time event.

Amazing how that works. About 800 years ago DD#2 spent an entire evening sheaking like a banshee and not going to sleep. So, about 11 pm I packed her up and took her to the ER. Got there and she entertained everyone in the place. The Dr told me she had an ear infection...I knew that. Got home, put her to bed again and when I got her up the next morning her ear drum had ruptured; problem solved.

Often a car ride and excitement produces enough adrenaline to cover up lots of stuff. Shanti is always better at the vet than at home. She is SO EXCITED TO BE THERE! I too have thought I need to film this at home.

Good luck figuring it out. Have those batteries charged and cameras ready.
