Guest larkabee
Beau's 2nd from outside toe on his back right leg swelled up pretty suddenly Saturday, and now the webbing in between is purple. He hasn't had any trouble walking on it though ... not even limping. Hasn't been licking it either, except a couple times Saturday morning. Can't find any visible sores in between the toes, but I can't really see very well in there. Any ideas on what's going on?
Guest KennelMom
Could be a dislocated toe...was he at playgroup or running around on Fri/Sat? Hugs and scritches to Beau!
Guest larkabee
Can I determine if it's dislocated by looking at it or feeling it? I can't see or feel anything out of the ordinary, but I'm no professional. He ran a little bit over the weekend, but not any more than usual. If it is a dislocation, what would I need to do? Guest KennelMom
They can dislocate them and the toe pops back in on it's own, so all you see is a bit of lameness afterwards and swelling (happened to Rocky once. Just started limping and then that night his toe swelled up. Since we'd been at playgroup when he started limping I was pretty sure it was just a sprained toe). Not a whole lot you can do for a toe like that except limit exercise and give it time. For the first 48hrs you can soak in cold water for 10-15 min a few times a day to help with the swelling. If it doesn't start to go down in a few days, the next step would be the vet for an xray. Edited April 7, 2008 by KennelMom
