Guest EmilyAnne
As many of you know, Henry has had two grand mals this month. There is a known trigger that caused this, but regardless, I have increased the Potassium Bromide and am considering adding pheno. I have heard about zonisamide, and I am going to ask my vet about this. I'd like to hear from those who have had succesful seizure control with this med, and i would like to hear where are the cheapest sources for this med as it is an expensive med. Guest Cris_M
Emily Anne, I use zonisamide as a migraine prophylactic -- a "side effect" discovered after the drug was slated to become generic. It is very much like Topamax in dealing with erractic brain impulses. As for cost, even though it is generic I haven't found anywhere that it is cheap. Probably you best bet is to call every pharmacy you can think of and see who will get it for you the cheapest. BTW, often the pharmacy will have to order it for you. I hope it works for Henry. I, too, take it for migraine; switched after having been on Topomax for quite awhile..but the Topomax was supressing my appetite too much..plus making me have "uh..Duh..uh?" moments.. (my neurologist said that some patients do find it's more like "dopey-max"!) Switched to the Zonisamide and much better... the effects disappeared and it does reduce most of the migraines intensity.. BUT the price is high..though I'm fortunate that my insurance covers most of it. BUT.. I recently had a kidney stone removed..and my neurologist now wants the report from the urologist as to exactly what type of stone it was. She said there's 2 kinds of kidney stones..and one of them is known to be an effect of being on the Zonisamide..that if it's that kind then I have to go off of it. I wonder it that would be something that side effect is something that would be of concern in a grey? At minimum.. at least worth discussing with your vet first.
