Guest SusanP
I just discovered that Zippy broke off a small side tooth at the gumline today. The roots are still in her gum. Is she likely to be in pain or can I wait till tomorrow to call the vet (It's 8pm now)? I'm assuming the roots will have to be removed. Has anyone had this before? Are antibiotics going to be necessary? She's been a little bit more whiny than usual this afternoon but is snoozing now, and I don't see obvious signs of discomfort. Would you expect she needs pain meds or not really? Why does this kind of thing always happen after hours?
Batmom
If it's not bothering, tomorrow should be soon enough to get her seen. I know what you mean. I have lectured the furkids many times on not doing this crap during e-vet hours, and they just do not get it. Hugs. Guest SusanP
Should I expect surgical removal of the roots and antibiotics? They wouldn't just leave the roots in there, would they?
Batmom
Yes. Shouldn't be too bad for a small side tooth tho. turbotaina
Yup, it'll be surgical removal. One of our fosters had broken his canine down to the gumline. That had to have hurt! But he was such a good sport. Ended up having 11 teeth removed, including 3 out of 4 canines (and the 4th needs to come out, too, but they couldn't do it in that round; he'd been under too long). So, as Batmom says, it should be pretty simple. Turbo broke one of his premolars in half lengthwise and I had it pulled a few days later during a dental Quote Meredith with Heyokha (HUS Me Teddy) and Crow (Mike Milbury). Guest SusanP
They can't get us in til tomorrow, so she is taking Tramadol today for pain, even though it isn't obvious that she is in pain. Now I feel bad that I didn't give her something yesterday. I thought she'd let us know if she hurt. Wanna know the really sad part? Tomorrow is her 10th birthday. What a way to celebrate! Guest greytexplorer
I am just now reading this. I would assume that anything dental is gonna cause pain, maybe a little, maybe a lot. Glad she's got the pain meds going for her now. Zippy's birthday involves pain medication. Now how bad can THAT be, really? Zippy, I love your name! Happy birfday, girlie! Guest snowberry
Happy birthday - hope the tooth fairy brings her something special for dinner! (Something soft ) Herbie's done this twice now, the little lower front teeth, and has had to have the roots removed, but the vet told me that the tooth dies very quickly when it's snapped like that. Hope she's OK now.
GeorgeofNE
Tramadol for a broken tooth when she's showing no signs of pain? That seems a bit much! One of my cats ended up having all but his front teeth extracted at his one and only dental (he died this past summer at 6) and he wasn't given anything for pain. And he was just fine, and even ate that night. Having broken my own two front teeth off, I can tell you once I got over the shock, it didn't hurt at all. What hurt was the cold air on the exposed nerves (broke them skiing). It'll hurt after they pull it, but I doubt it hurts now. Good luck!
