Guest sweetrn621
Hi all. So, Chance is my first grey and we've had him for 3 weeks. He's been doing wonderfully and I mentioned to the vet at his well vet visit that I wasn't sure if he was limping or if it was his gait that just looked like he's limping slightly in the front. She looked at his legs and paws and said everything looked ok. It's been so chilly out that I'm not sure that the cold doesn't bother him. I was just wondering how I can tell if maybe I should be putting booties or something on his feet?
silverfish
Unless it's freezing, or the ground has been salted for ice, or there's snow with a crust, I wouldn't put boots on him. If the vet doesn't think he is limping, he's probably OK, but many ex-racers do limp a little from old injuries - can you find out if he retired recently with an injury? One other thing, how old is he? Older greyhounds do sometimes get corns and vets often dismiss them as a cause for limping because in most breeds they don't cause any syptoms. However, greyhounds do have sensitive feet with little fat padding and they can cause serious lameness. kudzu
My anecdote: Adopted Venus, my first Grey, & thought she was limping occasionally but it was hard to narrow it down to one leg. Vet's found nothing. Suggested joint supplements as a "just in case" for arthritis in wrists. Helped a bit but decided to run a tick panel. (Her SNAP3 test had been negative.) She came up positive for Lyme but at a point where vet said in the past they would not have treated an asymptomatic dog & at that time V was considered asymptomatic. We decided to treat. Limping went away & Venus became much more energetic & playful. Just our experience.
Guest sweetrn621
Well, he has an appointment at the vet for his lyme booster in 2 weeks, so I will inquire more then.
Batmom
Do you leash-walk only, or do you have a fenced yard? Sometimes on leash, dog will seem to be limping very slightly in front because he alters his gait to keep the leash clip from whacking him in the shoulder. Guest sweetrn621
I hadn't even considered that. We leash-walk only.
