She called this morning (from home!) to see how she was doing. If she has ruptured a tendon, is she on medication for that? Pred or Metacam.. something? She's not on any meds right now but she is on glucosamine. She'll be on meds tomorrow after the ortho sees her. Good grief. no, no, she didn't suggest amputation. She said that sometimes these injuries are severe enough to require amputation and she felt that Dee *might* be in that category. I wasn't clear because just the idea bothered me. silverfish Posted March 13, 2008 Share Posted March 13, 2008 Well .. normally neither arthritis or ruptured ligament alone would result in amputation, but both together and both severe? Could be necessary if the vet thinks it won't heal usefully and she'd be in chronic pain. I'd want a specialist opinion though, on that one. She said they can fuse the joint. Maybe they mean something like that for Dee? No panicking allowed until you talk to the Ortho though. Hang in there! The good news is that there is nothing that is acute and needs surgery! Her injury is very old and was triggered - I'm thinking it is the snow out back. Anyway, we have metacalm for 10 days but he doesn't want her on something for longer periods than that. I'm not sure about that, but we'll take it as it comes. He also wants me to switch her from pro plan salmon to a vet-type food. He wants me to keep her quiet. Hah! Quiet? the only time that girl moves is if she is going to eat or steal one of my belongings... I don't have much faith in the 'vet foods' as the ingredients aren't usually impressive. If you have to change her food, I would suggest finding a different non-vet type food. I recall reading somewhere that food with supplements in it (such as glucosamine and chondroitin) are not very effective, as the cooking process destroys most of the nutrional value of the supplements. So, if more fish and those supplements are what the vet feels would be helpful, I'd maybe consider just adding them myself - a can of sardines, and some of the powders from the greyhound gang and that should do it. Especially if she is finally doing well on a specific food .... Glad to hear it doesn't appear to be anything as serious as was feared. You'll have to watch her on the metacam - if her leg doesn't hurt, she might go on being her exuberant Dee self and over do it! Quote My boys, together again...
