kolarik1
Before we gave Zelda a bath on Saturday I noticed that she had really bad dandruff. I see today that it is back again. Any ideas what this would be from? We have a humidifier that we run fulltime in our house to try to keep the humidity at least in the 45% range during the winter. We feed Eagle Pack Holistic to both puppers and Zelda is getting 2 fish oil capsules (1000 mg each) a day with her food, along with a acidophilus pill at lunch and about 1 TBSP. of yogurt with breakfast/dinner. Thanks. BTW I didn't notice the dandruff when we first got her. Oh, we also sprinkle DentaTreat on their lunch meals...we usually don't take their tummy warmers off too often in the winter, even when going for walks as sometimes it's so cold we just put their jackets on over their tummy warmers. Guest RosiesMom
Could it be from something other than her skin (I know, this is a dumb question...) Rosie had what looked like bad dandruff for a couple of days until we discovered she had "adopted" one of the pads from the kitchen chairs and taken it to her bed. The rubberized bottom part was flaking apart in tiny bits all over her bed, which she rolled around in two nights running before we figured out what the problem was. Sure looked like dandruff to me... W edited to correct spelling Edited March 10, 2008 by RosiesMom
kolarik1
Nope, she's pretty good about leaving things alone, thanks for the idea though...except Pop's food, which is the same as hers, but we catch her after she gets just a mouthful, sometimes before she even makes it to the dish. She only likes to really play with this purple rubber toy upstairs that has a loud squeak noise and a green/blue santa downstairs. Their beds range in color from red to dark plaid . I'm curious if this is allergies, skin reaction or just nothing to worry about? Guest WhenIGiveIn
How long have you had her? Does she seem nervous when she danders?
kolarik1
You know, she just found out about the ceiling fans (aka rotating blades of death in her opinion) about a week ago, so could that have caused it? BTW, she is getting better about them, will now lay down on the beds under the fans, but keeps an eye on them Quote Marble, Noah, Eden, Raya (red heeler), Cooper & Trooper (naughty kittens) Missing my bridge angels: Pop, Zelda, Mousey & Carmel
Guest WhenIGiveIn
If its nerves you can get a spray bottle and fill it with listerine and water about a 50/50 mix and mist her and it will neutralize the skin and calm the dander. Thats also a great thing for dogs that get nervous at m&g's it keeps them dander free and shinny.
Guest FordRacingRon
I think it may be season change,,but just a guess. Leia never has dandruff except when we transition form winter (such is it is in SOCAL) to summer. Leia get grizzley salmon oil in her dinner and that keeps her 100% dandruff free except for this time of year when it just makes it less worse then it would be without the oil (BTW here it is the "mailbox in the door slot of death"). Guest RocketDog
I have a dandruffy dog, and what works for us is fish oil and a product by Miracle Coat. It's a leave-in coat/skin conditioner with tea tree oil, and it works really well for him. I turn the spray nozzle to 'stream' and run a line of the stuff down his spine, then really work it in with a hound glove. I don't bathe him more than every 2-3 months (he's actually starting to get just a little 'funky' and he hasn't been bathed since December) and he gets 5 1000mg fish oil caps a day. Guest MomoftheFuzzy
Also try olive oil on her food. It does wonders -- for humans and dogs (and with hair, skin, nails, etc.) My Italian dad could echo this idea as well since Italians use OO on everything! tbhounds
We all are itching here--dogs and humans--it's the forced hot air system, so drying. You can give her a bath using Selsun Blue shampoo--works really well.

It is embarassing to have to explain to all the people petting them!
