Guest jupiterooos
Suddenly as in, right this minute. He was normal when he went into his crate to have dinner (pork neck) and when he came out, he was panting like crazy. He's panting like he just ran a race - and he never does that. Should I be concerned??
Guest mandm
Maybe there is a piece of bone caught in his throat. Not big enought to choke him, because then he wouldn't be able to pant, but just big enough to be uncomfortable. How about giving him some more food to push it down, if that is the problem. Or shove your fingers down his throat to feel for something. Mine has never choked, but I have heard that if they do, you should shove it down, not try to retrieve it. Guest LindsaySF
Since it was right after dinner, I would be worried about something being stuck, or about bloat. How is he now?
Guest KennelMom
If you think there *might* be something in his throat but it is not obstructing his breathing I would NOT start sticking my fingers in this throat to move things around. Can you imagine if you moved it so that it DID obstruct his breathing??? I think any attempt to dislodge something in the throat should only be done in an emergency situation where the dog can not breath at all. I would keep a close eye on him. He may have an upset stomach - maybe didn't chew something enough and he's panting in b/c he feels like vomiting.
Guest jupiterooos
The first thing that popped into my head was bloat - but is that possible if he just ate a normal meal and had a normal routine (i.e., no running about beforehand or anything). Batmom
A dog can get bloat any time, any place, for any reason. Are his gums nice and pink? Is his tummy soft? Does he have a fever? Guest jupiterooos
His gums are pink, I *think* his tummy is OK (he's laying down right now, and getting him up is one of our...issues) and I don't think he has a fever, but I don't really know how to tell. His ears/nose/paw pads don't feel overly warm to me.
Guest LindsaySF
Is he still panting? Do you have a thermometer to take his temp?
Guest adoptagreyhound
Can you get him to come to you for a treat? That's how we get our lazy girls to get off the bed or couch or whatever. If he would come to you for a treat or two, then you could observe his ability to swallow the treat, check his tummy, and maybe get him to drink some water. Let us know what's happening. Guest jupiterooos
OK, the panting/shallow breathing has stopped. I did poke at his tummy some - it felt soft to me, definitely not hard to the touch. There were a lot of tummy noises, though.
Guest LindsaySF
How is he today? Maybe he just gulped his food too fast and he was nauseous.
