Ivermectin

I'd like to start using Ivermectin instead of Heartguard or Interceptor because of the cost. Does anyone use it and what dosage do you use?

We use it. Dosing instructions are on the side of the bottle - .1ml/10lbs of body weight. Ours is specifically mixed for dogs (beef flavored liquid) from a prescription from our vet.

Yep, that's what we do too. We weigh them every time before we give them a dose.

I don't weigh them each time. I know each dog is in the 50ish, 60ish or 70ish weight range and just round up. So a 60-something pound dog gets .7 ml.

MOnty required three mega doses of Ivermectin for some weird parasites he had. The dose was high and he was monitored in the hospital the first time for any side effects. I don't know if at your dose you need to monitor your dogs.

uh...I know I don't. It's quite hard to OD a dog on Ivermectin. A .1 ml difference certainly isn't going to do it. When you buy the pre-packaged pills of ivermectin, they are for a weight range...the amount of ivermectin in prepackaged pills needs to be enough to treat the heaviest weight for that pill. For Heartguard, the highest range is 51-100 lbs. I figure, I'm probably dosing my dogs more accurately than just giving them a pill dosed for any dog in a 50 lb weight range.

Pretty hard to screw up liquid ivermectin, esp when it's labeled for dogs and given with the approval and instruction of our vet.

I think the dosing for Monty's nematodes must have been different. He received an IM injection of the med and then needed to be watched the first time for a reaction. I think now that I think of it, it was not the ivermectin so much as the "bugs" dying off quickly that could cause the severe allergic reaction they were watching for. sorry, realized that as I began to type!

Ivomec used here as well, for our own pets and also in the racing kennels

The dosage that Kennel mom put is the same we use.

But do check with your vet first. Some vets are totally against it.

We have used it from the very beginning. I've never had a problem with it at all. No bad reactions, even from Saint who is our seizure hound. It's much cheaper than Heartguard. A small bottle with all my hounds will last a little over 6 months and it costs me around $45.00 a bottle so it's so much cheaper!

The heartworm dose of Ivermectin is so tiny there is a pretty big margin for error. Dr. Stack and my vet both said a greyhound could basically eat a carton of Heartgard (I think one said "all they could stand in") without taking in a dangerous dose of Ivermectin.
