Guest crazy4greys
Tucker went to the vet today. I brought a fecal sample and good thing I did. It looks like he has some kind of bacterial problem, just dectectable by the smell alone! It was that bad! They will call me with the results if anything else shows up. He is on Metronidazole and then he will go on FortiFlora by Purina Veterinary Diets. He also had a scab on his belly and side which turns out to be a hemangioma (I think that is what it is called) but there were no signs of cancer cells when looking under the microscope. So for now I will keep an eye on it and if it doesn't heal, then they will need to be taken off. Guest 2Brindles
Give Tucker some gentle scritches from me. I hope that his infection (and scab) go away soon!
Guest mandm
I remember you posting in Food that he was always hungry. My greyhound had SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) which was diagnosed with a blood test. I treated it with Tylan powder, which is an alternative to Met., but it didn't help as much as changing the diet. My dog also needed much more food than a healthy dog in order to maintain weight. I believe that stomach absorption is compromised, to they need to eat more in order to get enough nutrients. Good luck. I hope it is resolved soon. Guest LindsaySF
Awww poor Tucker! I'm glad they seem to have a diagnosis now though. Do they know what caused it? Is that what was making him so hungry? Can you elaborate on the, umm, smell? Teagan's poop has smelled funky lately and I'm starting to wonder if he has something weird in there too. Mandm, what are the symptoms of SIBO?

Remolacha
Fletcher had something similar a couple of months ago. He has IBS, so he is prone to digestive upsets. A round of Metronidazole cleared him up, but his poop was very soft, a lighter color than usual, and smelled so bad that even the vet tech was holding the sample out at arm's length I hope Tucker starts feeling better. Guest crazy4greys
Can you elaborate on the, umm, smell? I had to drive with the windows open during the snowstorm and the whole vets office and back room smelled. The bag didn't control the smell. It was the wosrt smell ever! Very toxic!! Chronic intermittent diarrhea. http://www.dogaware.com/specific.html#sibo Uh oh. This is sounding strangely like Teagan lately. Dammit. He's been on a round of metranidazole already and it didn't seem to help. I will ask my vet about the blood test. How did you decide what to change the food to? (Sorry to hijack your thread Joanne ). It sounds like Tucker's symptoms match EPI on that page, not so much SIBO. It will be interesting to see what they find in the stool sample. I'm not sure if this question is directed at me, with the SIBO greyhound, but I will respond. I started feeding him raw out of desperation. He couldn't seem to properly digest anything and he was losing weight rapidly. Seems counterintuitive, feeding a dog with bacterial problems raw meat, with all it's bacteria. But it worked. Guest mandm
The question was for you. Thanks. Good. I hope it helped. And I hope you don't have to resort to anything so drastic. Oh, I should also mention that I supplement with oral folate (folic acid) & cobalamin (B12). The oral cobablamin is not supposed to be as effective as the injections, but it seems to work for us. His cobalamin is back up to normal levels. Your greyhound has a fabulous nose. Maybe it just looks especially long next to all those normal muzzles. But he is great looking. Guest LindsaySF
Any update on Tucker? Your greyhound has a fabulous nose. Maybe it just looks especially long next to all those normal muzzles. But he is great looking. Aww thanks! His nose is 2 inches too long for his snout, it's funny.
