Guest cas0673
Well, what happened was I was cleaning up and found a sewing needle and thread. I also found a spool of thread. I put the needle into the spool of thread and placed it on a table. WELL, I guess my "needlenose" wanted to do some sewing. He took the spool and the needle to his bed. I am not sure when he did that, some time Monday morning I think. So when I found the spool in his bed, I looked high and low for the needle. Every place he lays. NO NEEDLE. Called the Vet, come in for an x ray. OK. And there it was, a needle in his tummy. I can not figure out how he got it down his throat. Then I was off to the e-vet, which was about 45min to an hour away. It needed to come out, obviously. My poor baby had a needle in him. Well, $1300 later and a few hours, my baby was ready to go home. They took out with an endoscope. It still had some thread that was threaded on it when he swallowed it. Yikes. And Lesson, a very expensive lesson - beware of nonobvious things that may be lying around. Who would think he'd even be able to swallow the needle. He's ok now. So anybody else have any stories? Guest GreytMuse
Yikes! I am so sorry you and your pup have had to go through this. I am thankful that everything has turned out okay, though. I appreciate you sharing your story so we can learn from it. Please keep us updated on his progress as he heals up.
patricia
OMG....thank goodness all is well. I bet that hurt his throat going down. Flashy no longer gets into anything with the exception of his shoe collecting. Again...glad all is well and thank goodness they could remove it by means of endo. Guest peach174
How scary! I always keep the door to my sewing room closed, because I am afraid there may be a needle or pin on the floor. I was mostly afraid of it being stepped on. Trillian would most likely eat it though! (She eats everything she finds on the floor) Thanks for the reminder. Guest Mommydog
Yikes! I'm glad he's OK. I've heard of that happening a few times with cats, but never a dog. It seems cats will play with the thread and end up swallowing the needle, they say if you can see the thread at the back of their throat never, ever try to pull it out, as there could be a needle attached, and you may end up up doing more damage. Just get them to the vet.

Guest HeatherDemps
Yikes- how scary! Fortunately, I don't sew and don't have needles! Still, a good reminder that they will sometimes eat the oddest things.... glad that your hound is okay!
Ozziemydoggy
Oh wow, that's VERY scary!! Guest greytexplorer
Yes, something similar here...........with my cat, Tippy. This happened several years ago. I heard Tippy under the dining room table making the godawfullest noises. I go to pick her up and see that she has a NEEDLE stuck in her Upper Palate, with the thread hanging out of her mouth. I raced her to the vet. They called all the staff in to see it. NO ONE had seen this problem before. The needle was vertical and Tippy couldn't close her mouth. The vet was able to remove the needle and thread. YIKES and Tippy is almost 19 yrs old now.

queenwinniesmom
Oh, my gosh, that gives me the chills just thinking about it! So sorry you both had to go through that, but it's a good cautionary tale. I don't sew either, but when you think about it, there are lots of sharp things they can, for some reason, swallow. Glad it's out! Guest luckydog
If you have needles in the house, always leave thread in it. If you step on the needle, the thread will help the dr. in locating it in your foot. Ask me how I know. =:-O
heartdogs
Don't leave a pin cushion or pin box around either for the same reason. When I was little my sister had left a pin cushion where the cat found it & pulled several pins & needle out & swallowed them. I remember my father soaking bread in milk & stuffing it down kitty. Luckily everythin came thru fine but you never know what fur kids will try to eat. Hope your pupper heals ok.

silverfish
Yikes! I'm glad he was OK, and that they managed to get it with endoscopy! When I was about thirteen or fourteen and had never had a dog in my life, a friend of mine got a lab puppy. I guess he was about six months old when I went round to her house one day to do some sewing with her. Suddenly the pup was underfoot and my friend's mother was screaming 'He's got a needle!! Don't you know not to leave needles lying about?' while standing there flapping her hands. I grabbed the dog by the snout, opened his mouth, found the thread and then the needle and yanked it out of there. Thank heavens I was able to find it and get it, it was seconds from going down the chute. Neither one of us girls knew anything much about dogs, and clearly her mother didn't either - she had been there all the time and hadn't mentioned to us to be careful. I thought it was a great fuss about nothing much at the time. It was only later, when I was working for vets, that I realised the horrible possibilities and the expense we nearly put them to. Guest FullMetalFrank
When I was a kid, my Mom's cat swallowed a needle and thread; which before Mom could get her to the vet, she horked up along with a bunch of grass... She was fine but the experience made me paranoid about putting my sewing needles away as soon as I am done! Little stinkers will get into stuff! I am glad your grey is going to be fine, scary experience, for sure.
LBass
I'm so glad your baby came through the surgery and is on the mend! Perhaps he'll leave the sewing to you from now on? You asked if anyone had any sotries...about 3 years ago Piper swallowed my little embroidered sewing caddy. It was about 3" by 5" and held a pair of scissors and a couple of needles. I found the scissors on the floor but no strawberry embroidered caddy anywhere to be found. To the vet we went. X-rays reveled the needles in his upper intestine. I suppose because we all figured they were attached to the fabric caddy, the vet recommended watching them with x-rays. Later that day we could see them further down in his intestines. That evening the vet handed be a baggy containing a really disgusting sewing caddy (which I did not try to salvage) and the needles. Amazingly, it had all passed right through Piper's cast iron tummy. I felt so lucky to have dodged both a serious health crisis and a surgery! Quote Lucy with Greyhound Nate and OSH Tinker. Guest ArtysPeople
Who would think he'd even be able to swallow the needle. He's ok now. So anybody else have any stories? Yowzers. So glad you realized what happened and got it taken care of in time. Now for story time ... of course I've got stories! My brother's ex-in-laws have a dog that will literally eat anything she can get into her mouth. The best was when she was under a year old, she walked into a bedroom and, right in front of one of the daughters in the family, pulled a night light out of the socket and swallowed the whole thing. An expensive vet trip and emergency surgery later, and she was back to her normal self. To this day, they're still not quite sure how she did it without breaking the bulb or anything, as she's only a medium-size dog. As for why, well, some things will always be a mystery.
