Guest Shermanator
Sherman was playing today, and all of a sudden began to yelp with a high pitched-frantic-frenzied pitch and pulled up his front right leg and hop around. After about 2 minutes of circling and yelping, he finally laid down, panting heavily. DH said he has seen this before- this is the third time in about 3 months Sherman has had a cramp like that. He's fine now, walking normal, except he went to bed, early- he's wiped out. What might cause this, and how can I help him? He never cries like that, and it kills me. Hawthorn
This occasionally happens to Sunny and I agree it is very distressing. I don't know what causes it or how to prevent it, but when it happens to Sunny we massage the affected muscles quite firmly (usually we can see/feel a sort of knotted area in the muscle) and also stretch the leg out gently and this seems to make the cramping go away. Then we walk him around slowly for a few minutes. Quote When a relationship of love is disrupted, the relationship does not cease. The love continues; therefore, the relationship continues. Batmom
Sometimes potassium helps -- try giving him 1/3 of a banana a couple times a week (or a teaspoon of blackstrap molasses -- not regular; blackstrap has the most potassium). Calcium, sodium, and hydration can also play a role in cramping so you'll want to make sure he's getting a well-balanced diet and drinking enough. Guest charmsmom
Humans get leg cramps when their potassium is low. I'd agree that would be my first line of defense. If it continues, have him checked for diabetes. That can cause low potassium.
