Guest ss556
Hi, my friend's grey is 11 and has GLN. She is on meds and is now eating RAW, which is fairly new. Her breath odor has changed to ammonia like. Is this because of the kidney disease? I'm sure she will call her vet on Monday, but I wanted to see if I could get some information. Guest LynnM
It can be, but if it is, the dog is likely showing other serious, end-stage kidney failure symptoms. Ask your friend if she is supplementing with fish oil. If she is, discontinue the supplement and see if the odor goes away. If she's not supplementing, then a visit to the vet is in order. Guest greytexplorer
weird smelling breath could also be a sign of diabetes
Guest suzye
I agree with Lynn. The smell could be what results from azotemia when the toxins have built up because the kidneys can no longer do any filtering, but I wouldn't expect that to be the first or most extreme symptom that's noticed. Depending on how closely the dog is being monitored (blood tests and such), I'd probably want to get him checked out ASAP.
seeh2o
From what I understand the breath from diabetes is bad, but has a weird sweet smell.
