Guest acb74
I'm taking Bess for x-rays tomorrow and I'm terrified of what they'll reveal. Bess has been limping since New Year's Eve. It's not very bad, and when I first took her to the vet a few weeks ago, she flinched a little when the vet moved her elbow around. Bess is a big-time romper, and she'll often come down on her elbows with her hind end in the air. The vet didn't see any red flags that would prompt her to x-ray Bess, so we started her on rimadyl. Suddenly, Bess became a different dog--so happy and more energetic than we'd ever seen her. The limp improved as well, but we'd still see her favoring her leg at the beginning and end of walks. Once off the rimadyl, she started to limp a little, so we put her back on the meds. Now she's very gimpy and stiff. Of course, the weather here in Ohio has not been cooperating. Front after front has rolled in, and our other grey with arthritis has been a mess, too. Does this sound more like a joint flair-up, or is there a good chance this is OS? I'm so nervous; Bess is only 4. Everything else about her seems normal, and she is baring weight on that leg. I really don't want to post here with another OS casualty. There are too damn many already. Thanks, Alexandra Edited January 31, 2008 by acb74
Guest Machbragal
I get so scared when I hear about limping. I'm keeping her in my prayers. Please let us know how it goes.
LadyBailey
Since she is younger and sounds fairly active and the weather being cold and crappy - it very well may be just an injury. But it's best to have the xrays - it's going to be whatever is it and it's always best to know as soon as possible so you have more options. Sending prayers for Bess. Guest acb74
Well, we're back from the vet and Bess's x-rays were clean; no bone changes, no swelling. The vet thinks that it's a soft tissue injury. We'll continue to watch her, and if the limp persists or worsens, we'll take her again for more x-rays. Right now, she's a happy girl--so pleased to be back home. Thanks for the words of encouragement and the prayers. They were much appreciated. MerlinsMum
So glad you didn't get any bad news! Hopefully the vet has it right. These types of injuries can really take quite some time to heal - especially if your girl is so active. I'll be keeping you both in my thoughts. I had the same thing with Paul a few months after we brought him home. I was crying for three days before I brought him to the vet. He was two weeks on deramax and leash walking; no running and has recovered fine. Of course, yesterday he ran into a table and has a bruise the size of Rhode Island on the back of his leg and tush, but doesn't seem to be bothered by it. Guest houndlover
That is great news about Bess! Taking your pups to the vet for a limp has got to be one of the most gut wrenching things that I have ever had to do so I know how worried you must have been. I'm sure that she will be back to normal in no time.
