My 86 pound greyhound ate most of a stick of margarine.....we called the ER vet and she said to just watch him for vomiting and diarrhea. She said do not induce vomiting which someone else had told us to do. Can anyone give me any more info on what we should do?

Thank you in advance......

In the grand scheme of wierd stuff my dog has eaten, butter/margarine isn't even a blip on the radar, but then, this is the dog that ate and pooped out much of a bag of potting soil!

Thank you, thank you all.....I am frantically searching online and really can find no information! A friend's greyhound ate pure butter and was very sick so I panicked when my husband discovered her left the margarine on the counter. :angryfire

This is the boy who is taking seizure meds also so of course I'm worried about the preservatives in the margarine. Lynn mentioned skipping his dinner but would the food perhaps soak up some of the margarine? I worry about him having too empty a tummy and low blood sugar perhaps triggering a seizure...

Thank you guys for responding so quickly....after searching unsuccessfully online I KNEW you guys would have the answers right away!!

Agreed! Harve once ate most of a tub of margarine. He too ate lots of other stuff (although no potting soil but, lots of dirt out of the ground). Some of the things he ate I wouldn't even talk about publicly. ;)

All it is is fat (calories! Woohoo!). Nothing to worry about in a healthy dog. I say skip the next meal because the margarine is taking the place of the meal. Feeding twice would be asking for a mess to clean up.

Seriously... one of mine eats wierder stuff than this with alarming regularity. The only time he's ever made himself sick was when he gorged himself on plain dog food (just massive quantities of it). Don't worry about it.

Lucky you it's only margarine! In one week my counter surfing foster ate a small (5 lbs) bag of bird seed, a bar of soap, and all the wheat from inside a wheat pack (the kind you heat up to put on a sore back).

Talk about strange looking poos! :lol

The dog that was really sick after eating butter possibly had pancreatitis. Apart from throwing up and/or runny poop, that's the only health issue I can think it mght cause, and it's really fairly unlikely in a healthy dog. :)

A dog who is prone to pancreatitis might really suffer after eating this much fat, but I wouldn't worry if your boy has never had a problem with it. As to the seizure meds and eating ... well, I'm not sure about the meds, but I would keep everything as much in his normal routine as possible, including feeding him at the usual time. You might find he's not particularly hungry though. :P

Although it is probably nothing you do have to watch for pancreatitis. Fat causes that. So like your vet said, watch for vomiting.

If nothing happens, then he's okay.

And if he's used to having some people food and the fat associated with it, then that's better than if he was on a strict kibble diet. That's more of a shock to his system.

As Silverfish says. I wouldn't worry much unless he has a known problem with fats. Excessive fat in the diet eventually can lead to pancreatitis but it won't happen from one event.

You will probably be OK.

Stand by with shovel, mop, and gas mask.

Good luck!

If it's anything like eating a pound of cheese ( he left the wrapper) I'd second the above! You may also need rubber gloves and plenty of hot water...

Last Christmas, we decided to open gifts before we totally cleaned off the dinner table. On the dinner table was the butter, cute little Christmas tree shaped into butter, well Xena apparently seized the opportunity as we were not paying attention to see what was on the table. I looked up just in time to see Xena scarfing down the Christmas tree butter  I thought for sure that she would have the big D, but she didn't. She was fine.

Janine - It's better to start a new thread for something urgent like this so that people see there is a new, urgent post.

I would probably consult with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.  There is a fee but the phone is manned by medical specialists - not just operators. https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control

Pancreatitis is a possibility due to all of the oil in the product, as well as diarrhea.

Repeating, call poison control. They have literally saved my dog's life on calls that were close as to whether it needed intervention or not. I would expect it's okay, but they'll take all of your dog's details, the brand, his weight, the amount, his medical history, etc. into consideration. Worth every penny. I hope your baby is okay.

1 hour ago, Janine said:

My 4.5 month old just ate a tub of Margerine. He threw up almost right away then threw up again a few hours later. Should I worry? I am at least 1.5 hours from the nearest vet.

Agree with the others on calling poison control. When we took Sweep to the e-vet once for a different issue, they were treating a dog who had ingested something he shouldn't and even they had the owner call poison control while they monitored the dog. Better safe than sorry. Please keep us posted!
