gracegirl
Well shoot! I was getting Grace out of the car today so she was standing at my eye level, and she saw something so her eyes darted to the side. That's when I noticed these brown 'rings' around the outer part of her eye, in the whites of her eyes. They are not clouding the iris, but a brown crescent shape next to her iris. Of course I made a vet appointment for Wednesday and used the next two hours at work (sssshhhhh, don’t tell my boss!) to research pannus. I found one article that says "The first evidence of this disorder is usually infiltration into the clear cornea, causing white, pink or brown opacification. This invariably starts at the edge of the clear cornea and extends inward. The most common location is at the outer, lower corner of the eye." The thing is, this is in the whites of her eyes, and is definitely brown, not brown opacification. I'll try to take a photo when I get home tonight if I can. Can anyone offer thoughts or advice? I've seen Kona and Leo's pannus photos, but they show the opafication on the cornea, rather than what I'm seeing in the whites of Grace's eyes. If anyone else has additional photos, please post! Thanks. And if you don't think it's pannus...anythign else it could be? I'd like to do the research before the appointment on Wednesday. Guest carolyn
Waggin's pannus made the whites of her eyes red and her irises cloudy. Her normal vet didn't diagnose it - we had to take her to a specialist. You may encounter something similar.
Guest grey_dreams
Zuki has the same. I've asked a few people about it (including regular vet) and the responses were that it's normal. I've also been thinking about pannus and did some research, but haven't made an appointment with a specialist. Please keep us posted on what answers you get. macoduck
Wally's eyes have some brown in the sclera (white part), on the outer side. No clouding of the eyes, no redness. Not new, he's always had it. Never paws at his eyes. I searched on Google myself last night for all sorts of eye disorders and couldn't find anything like it. It's like he's got a bit of brindling in his eyes. O O <---normal eye balls <O O> <----- brown markings in the white sclera like a streak I'm curious to see what you find out Gracegirl. That is EXACTLY what it looks like on Grace too! Nice work! I'll take her to the vet (he missed removing a staple that I found last night, we have to go anyway) and I'll keep everyone poted. We spend so much time outside in the summer and I'm just so paranoid that it's pannus....especially because Grace raced in Colorado and the altitude can contribute to it too. macoduck
I tried to get a picture of Wally's eye. You can see the brown. You should see the white of his eyes, but instead you can see the brown streak. It is only on the outer side of both eyes. Her normal vet didn't diagnose it - we had to take her to a specialist. You may encounter something similar. Some vets are just not that familiar with pannus. I would recommend seeing a veterinary opthamologist. They have all the optical equipment plus the training. The average vet office just does not have that equipment. macoduck
Since gracegirl said it looked like what Wally has, I'd say neither of the links above show it. The pannus and the heterochromia show the discoloration within the iris. What Grace and Wally have is what seems to be a streak of lighter color from the iris into the white part of the eye. galgrey
I'll be watching this with interest too. I have some concerns about Carly's eyes -- they're red and itchy. I don't see any clouding in her corneas or iris like the photos in the Grassmere link show, but I'm assuming those pictures show pannus that's fairly advanced? I hope you get good news about, Grace. I'll be checking back for an update. ETA: this LINK provides more description of the disease but doesn't have pictures. Fenway's eyes are red as well....but the difference with him is that his comes and goes so I'm let to believe it's environmental allergies. I'll have the vet take a look at Grace, and he'll either say 1. hhhhmmmm, that's not normal (in which case I'll go to a specialist) or 2. oh yeah, I see this all the time...it's called XXXXX. Either way I'll post here since several people are watching this thread. Fingers crossed that I'm just a paranoid mom! Gracegirl Does Grace's eye look anything like the dog's eye in the article in this link? Sometimes pigment from the iris can 'leak'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heterochromia Just like Wally's owner, it's not so much a discoloration within the iris....but a brown crescent "next to" the iris. The iris itself looks completely normal. None of these symptoms are tell-tale signs of pannus, but I'd like to check with the vet just in case. Batmom
It's normal to have some brown bits in the white part of the eye. But, if in doubt, never hurts for the vet to have a look-see. Brindles
All three of mine have it. Totally normal. I'm interested to see what a vet says about it, though. gracegirl
Well to top it off Grace's eyes were nice and red for the vet today too. All in all though, clean bill of health. He has seen Pannus before in GSD so I'm glad to know he's experienced with the disease. The coloration in her eyes, just like Wally's coloration, is normal. He had no explanation for why, that's just the way things are. Ducky had a great "diagram" of what it looks like.... <O O> with the < > being the discoloration in the whites of the eyes, and the O O being the iris. So no worries for the rest of you, the tell tale sign of pannus is the clouding. I also had him look at some spots on her belly and generally check over her injury site. All things considered, she's doing great! Hopefully that puts to rest the worries for some of you as well.
