Guest Speedhoundz
Last week, I posted about Kane's eye issues here. We just got back from seeing the veterinary opthalmologist. It's pannus. Fortunately, he only has pannus of the third eyelids right now, so we are treating it aggressively with eye drops for the next couple of weeks before it has the chance to affect his corneas. The opthalmologist said he may not need to be on eye drops for the rest of his life, but we'll see. I'll also probably need to have a dental done on him soon, as any inflammation in his mouth can stimulate the immune system to be more active. Thanks to all of you for encouraging me to take him to a specialist and sending your well wishes. At least this is a treatable problem! turbotaina
Glad you got a DX quickly. Pannus, from what I understand, is fairly easily and inexpensively controlled. AND you have an excuse to buy him doggles since UV rays seem to aggravate the condition Quote Meredith with Heyokha (HUS Me Teddy) and Crow (Mike Milbury). Guest HeatherDemps
I have doggles for Demspey- got them when he was diagnosed with pannus. Can't keep them on him for long, but for the short-time that he'll wear them, he is the baddest looking dog on the trails.

inugrey
Wow, amazing to have caught it to soon. I looked at that picture and just saw a red eye. I wouldn't have even thought twice about it. Isn't Kane a Daytona boy? He should have gotten a dental while he got clipped. I think you need to be super careful about sizing those weird greyhound heads. I've seen them every year at GiG (I think so, anyway), so you can try some on there and see what fits best. I wouldn't have even thought twice about it. Isn't Kane a Daytona boy? He should have gotten a dental while he got clipped. Well, as it turns out, he doesn't have pannus of the cornea, so in that pic, you just see a red, irritated eye. What you can't see is the third eyelid, which is where the pannus is right now. Without treatment, it could certainly progress to the corneas. He also had discharge and kept rubbing his eyes, and previous treatments didn't make a difference. Here is a pic of his third eyelid of his left eye--you can see how thick it is: So if your grey's eyelids ever look like this, get thee to a specialist! Also--he is from Daytona. I didn't know they received a full-blown dental. I must say, I was very proud of my boy, who was quite tolerant of people putting all kinds of things in his eyes this morning. He only had one "freakout" moment. Just for fun, here's a pic of him with his favorite stuffy, Fuzzy Bear (excuse the blurriness):
Greytlady94
Not a bad diagnosis, Pannus is generally well controlled with daily medication. Guest houndlover
Glad to hear that you decided to go to a specialist and had such a quick dx! I know that it sucks that there is something medically wrong with Kane but it could be a lot worse.

Yup, all our Daytona puppers have a full dental while they're under for the snippin'. I've yet to see a Daytona dog come up with bad teeth. Well, there's the blue boy, but his are broken, not dirty I asked Rebekah about this last night while we were talking about haul details. She said they do what they can do while the dog is under anesthesia. This usually involves some scraping and a little bit of cleaning. It doesn't involve extractions, and if the dog isn't tolerating the anesthesia well, they won't do anything. She said they do what they have time for.
