Allergies, Pannus, Or Something Else?

Kane's third eyelid in both eyes has been pinkish-red since I adopted him two months ago. Shortly after, he started having clear discharge from both eyes. My vet, who's grey savvy, suspected allergies and sent me home with eyedrops. When the eyedrops didn't do anything, she had me give him Benadryl. No change. Now, his left eye is looking all blood vessely (is that a word?!) and a little brown on one side. I emailed a pic to my vet, who still suspects allergies, but I am taking Kane in next weekend for an eye pressure test and tear test to check for glaucoma and Dry Eye Syndrome. She doesn't think it's pannus, but I have to admit I'm a little concerned it may be the beginning stages of it. In the meantime, I thought I'd post a pic here to see if you all had any thoughts. The eyes definitely bother him--he'll paw at them or rub them on the carpet.

If any of you have a dog with allergies that cause these same symptoms, what do you do to relieve them?

Note: You can see the clear eye goop in this picture along with the blood vessels. What you can't see is the irritated third eyelid.

Beth, are you taking him to a veterinary opthalmologist? That's your best bet - I hesitate to have a regular vet dx eye problems (unless it's something easy like a cornea scratch or an infection). There's a good one over in Bowie that we used for a foster.

I would have him seen by a veterinary ophthalmologist.

Specialists often catch things ordinary vets (even "grey-savvy" vets) can miss. Two vets misdiagnosed Tipper's pannus before I decided to take him to a specialist on my own. Yup, it was pannus.

Is he being seen by Dr. K? Even so, I'd still see an opthalmologist, and you know how much I love Dr. K!

Yes, Dr. K. My appointment for the eye tests is with her--but do you think I should have the opthalmologist do them instead? I was thinking I'd have her do the tests, get the results, and then go to an opth. if they are inconclusive. Dr. K admitted they don't see pannus much in general practice, and recommended Dr. Beale (in Vienna, I think) if I want to see a specialist. Know anything about him?

Don't know Dr. Beale, but I'd go ahead and set something up with him. Just quicker to get an accurate DX from a specialist.

If he hasn't had a tick panel run, I would do that.

We have a dog in our adoption group that had red third eyelids when I got her to foster and I was told it was allergies. A few days later someone else in the adoption group saw her and decided to take her to the ophthalmologist. He couldn't find anything wrong, but gave her an ointment for her eyes. The woman who was concerned about her eyes decided to have a tick panel run on her and it came back with very high titers for both erlichia and babesia, so she's now being treated and her eyes are much better.

I'm not saying it's a TBD, but it's something else to think about.

Thank you for the suggestion. He was tested for TBDs through NC State and was negative for everything.

Then I think the ophthalmogist is probably the way to go. It's better to go and find out it's just allergies. Good luck with your baby. I hope it's nothing serious.

At first glance, it looks like Pannus to me. I would definitely go to an eye specialist.

Here is a pic of Koda's Pannus:

And her 'good' eye for comparison:

Yikes. Kane's eye looks like Koda's "good" eye.

I forgot to mention that he almost always sneezes--just once--as soon as we go outside. So maybe it IS just allergies. I don't want to overreact and run to a specialist, but I guess it's better to be safe than sorry. His eyes are worth it. :)
