Guest funkytown
Ive just rehomed a retired greyhound and when we first got her she had a little bit of what looks like eczema around her hind legs, this seemed to get better at first but a week later has flamed up! I have taken her to the vet and they have said they will do a scrap sample when she goes under to be spayed, but thats not until the 19th and I would rather do something now. Any ideas? I have read up on this and it could be down to the stress of the move as she is a very sensitive and timid dog and we have had to give her a lot of time and patience. We have been adding some small amounts of oily fish to her diet as heard this can help. Any other ideas would be greatfully received?? Guest greytmonty
Monty has very bad allergies and they first manifested as a red rash on his thighs. Ask your vet about a colloidal oatmeal pet shampoo and also Benadryl.
Sighthounds4me
You can try tea tree oil, if the dog will tolerate it. It's pretty stinky, though, and really affects them. Manero, for example, gets CRAZY when he smells it - he hates it, and wants to get away. You can also try Bag Balm to moisturize the heck out of it. I've had excema (sometimes it comes back), and I find that the combo of tea tree oil and super-duper moisturizing helps a lot. And, if the skin scraping shows bacterial, viral, and/or fungal problems, the tea tree oil will help. It's a natural anti-microbial! Guest minzenon
Solution of 3/4 water add 1/4 listerine (yes human mouth wash) if there is any bacteria there it will kill it. Just dab solution on 2-3 day.
2NOFLEAS
What works for us: paste made with baking soda and just a drop or two of tea tree oil - too much tea tree or directly on a sore will burn (I know from personal experience) and remember they have a sense of smell many more times stronger than ours - too strong of a smell can really bother and may even hurt them. Also adding tea tree to shampoo helps. spray - Dermacare - has aloe and lanolin ---- when Cofax get itchy - she'll go look for the bottle! Or make your own spray. I add a can of tuna or other fish to dinners, fish oil pills and fish cookies - I think she starts to grow fins when she gets the flaky dry skin from all the fish! Guest GoldenMom
We found that Shea Butter Skin Repair and Dander Care natural spray does wonders for eczema, dry skin and hot spots. It's nice that is is fragrance free, since some dogs have allergies to scented products. This clear, lightweight spray has Shea Butter, and is enriched with calendula, comfrey, alfalfa, goldenseal, and plantain to help soothe itchy and irritated skin fast. It is mild enough for dogs with sensitive or allergy-prone skin. It has many of the same ingredients in human products that are all natural for dry skin. I have an anti-itch cream I use on our family for bug bites and calendula and comfrey are in that cream too which I bought at a health food store. Oatmeal shampoo can also be soothing for a dog's dry skin. Greyhounds typically do not need frequent bathing. In general, it's best not to bathe our dogs more frequently than every two weeks. Our dog Sadie is a Therapy Dog with the Delta Society, and we need to bathe her before each visit. So we try to space out her visits to 2 weeks apart so we don't irritate her skin. When it does get dry, we use the Shea Butter Skin Repair and Dander Care spray to mind the dry patches. Hope this helps you.
