Guest LindsaySF
Teagan has something going on with his ear, and we are in Dewey right now. Yesterday while shopping someone was petting him and rubbed his ear. He tilted his head to the side and groaned loudly. She thought it was cute, but I knew something was wrong as he never does that. I lifted up his ear flap and looked in there and it was pretty dirty compared to the other ear. Everytime I touched it he would lean his head to the side and groan. So we headed back to the hotel room and I cleaned it out the best I could with toilet paper and Q-tips. Man, if you guys had seen the stuff that came out of there. I feel horrible for not noticing it before, but he did not have any symptoms at all (no scratching, no shaking of the head, no tilting head to the side, etc). And I had petted him 100 times this week (other people did too) but I guess it wasn't quite the right spot, because he didn't do the groaning thing until we saw that lady. It was also very swollen and red in that ear, but it didn't have an odor. After I cleaned it he seemed to notice it more, and began scratching with his back foot. He scratched it while I went to the bathroom to throw the Q-tips out and he made the ear bleed, then he shook his head and sprayed blood all over my motel room wall. So we pop in the car and head to the nearest petstore for ear cleaning solution and ear mite treatment. He did seem better after treating with that, and the ear was significantly less red and inflamed. He is still shaking his head a bit, but I guess that could be from the ear mite drops being deep in there. Does this sound like ear mites to you guys? Is there anything else I can do from here? Does he need to see the vet when we get back home? Also, I didn't think much of it before, but now I'm wondering. Teegs hasn't finished his last 2 meals, and that isn't like him. I attributed it to excitement and nerves (though he is acting totally fine, not scared, and he played with toys), but now I'm wondering if his ear has something to do with it. He just got me up at 5:30 AM to pee (another thing he never does), and he went to the bowl looking for food. I gave him just wet food and he ate it (), so afterwards I put some plain kibble in the bowl (I usually mix them) and he ate some of that but not all. He is sleeping now. Should I be worried about this food thing? Thanks in advance for any advice. Sorry for the novel, I am not capable of getting to the point apparently. ~Lindsay~
Guest guinness_the_greyt
Doesnt sound like mites to me... Sounds like a yeast infection. An old foster I had that is now my friends greyhound has chronic infections... Very seasonal and are connected to allergies with her. My pit mix would get yeastie ears anytime he got into something he was allergic to... He was allergic to a lot of dyes in foods... and also different perfumed cleansers... I had to be really careful with him over the years when trying to change products. Don't OVER CLEAN the ear... you will do more damage then good. If he has made it bleed hold off on any major cleaning. I would give him a benedryl in case it's allergy related.

Guest CyndiW
Hope Teagan's ear is feeling better soon. Maybe if it isn't, the vet there can help, especially if it is yeast. Of course, it never fails that this stuff happens at the most inconvenient times.
Greylover97
Went through the same thing with Jake, minus the bleeding part. Yeast ear infection. He will need drops from the vet. Batmom
Yeast or bacteria. Not an emergency but if there's a vet you can see quick, some drops will make him much more comfortable. Guest CindiLuvsGreys
Yep, Sounds like yeast. I wouldn't worry too much about the feeding schedule being off. He is in a new place and there is a lot of excitement. If he doesn't go back to his regular way of eating when you get home I would go see the vet. Guest wmlcml6
Coach here We had a girl in our kennel get an ear infection... I think it was yeast related, not real sure though. But, we just used a simple ol' home remedy and it cleared up like a charm. Mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and isopropyl alcohol... squirt enough in the ear so you can work it around inside. Clean it as it needs to be cleaned and in a few days... voila! No more icky ears

I could not believe all the money but most of all the agony that he went through trying to heal his little ear and such an inexpensive easy fix was there all along. I hope your babe is feeling much better now...it is so hard to be away and have things happen. Edited October 7, 2007 by patricia Quote Patti-Mommy of Lady Sophia 7-28-92 - 8-3-04... Guest taylorsmom
Be careful with putting the isopropyl alcohol in the ears, if there is any open wound (from the scratching/bleeding) the alcohol will sting like h**L!!! I have used a gentian violet solution when Lucy used to get yeasty ears that worked like a charm!! You can order it online at Urban Carnivore. By the way, it was nice to run into you and Teagan at the NGAP store at Dewey !! Edited October 10, 2007 by taylorsmom
