greytdecals
tape worms eeeewwwww...I was shocked because #1- she is on heartworm meds #2- she was showing absolutely no symptoms that would make me think otherwise (no diarrhea etc.) #3- she's my pretty girlie and pretty girlies don't get ugly worms So, 3 days of Panacur and a retest on Monday. Just a little set-back before I can get her Therapy work rolling. p.s. is it just me or when your dog gets worms does it make you feel like a bad parent, like you've not taken care of your dog, like you're dirty or something I can't image how on earth she got the tape worms. Also, I thought panacur does not treat the type of tape worms that dogs get...I thought they needed Droncet (or however it is spelled) I actually think the Dr. was not even sure that it was tape worms..he said they looked "kinda" like them but funnier whatever that meant...like were the tape worms telling jokes or something I hope my girlie gets rid of these nasty things soon so she can start her new job! ZoomDoggy
Heeeey, welcome to the wiggly-poo club! (You don't wanna know what the secret handshake is...) I thought Droncit was the tapeworm med of choice too. Chancy had tapes when I first got her from her previous owners. Gross gross gross! But thankfully they were pretty easy to get rid of. Good luck to your pretty pretty girlie! Quote ~Aimee, with Flower, Alan, Queenie, & Spodee Odee! And forever in my heart: Tipper, Sissy, Chancy, Marla, Dazzle, Alimony, and Boo. Wonder
Most of my fosters have had tapes during their stay with me. YUCK! Yes on the Droncit My vet said that tapes usually don't show up in fecals either Quote Kari and the pups.Run free sweet Hana 9/21/08-9/12/10. Greylover97
If you ask me it's a mystery on the Heartworm meds. Carolina got hook works and we never miss a dose of Heartguard. If the Panacur doesn't work then have the vet try Droncit. I guess I will do the Panacur and if she still tests positive then I will ask him to treat with the Droncit. Quote Suzie Collins Owner/Artist Skinny Hound Designs Greyhound decals, magnets and signs. Guest longdogs
Heartworm drugs alone do not protect against other worms although some brands do have other wormers included along with the heartworm treatment. A healthy adult dog will also show few symptoms if it is not heavily infected, meanwhile it spreads the worms throughout the area. It is almost inevitable that an untreated dog will have worms. The effects of worms will kick-in if your dog becomes ill and starts to lose condition, then worms can drag down its health. Pups, and in some cases children, can suffer serious consequences from certain worms picked up from untreated dogs.
Guest lms
We got Panacur when our dog had hookworm. I don't know how similar they look to tapeworms, but hey, whatever works, right? A related question: Is there a particular time of year when the 'worms are more likely to show up?
Guest junebug
I have never had a dog with tape worms (unless I did not know it!), but my cats have had them. My understanding is that they are carried by fleas, so when the cats have turned up with them we always get out the flea comb to check for fleas or flea dirt. I was horrified when my cats first had them-they were indoor cats and I never dreamed that they could get them- but when you realize how common fleas are in the environment, all it takes is an animal outside a screen door or one hitchhiking a ride into the house to get them. The segments that the animal passes can be wiggley, but they can also be found dried up on a surface where the animal was and they look like little grains of white rice. Ours were easy to get rid of- at that time they were given droncit. I did keep up with the Frontline for the fleas for several months to make sure that they were not lurking in the environment. Guest greyladydown
Dogs are infected with tapeworms by swallowing fleas or eating raw meat that is contaminated, so no Heartworm medication will be effective in controlling tapes. Panacur does kill one type of tapeworm, but that type is usually not found in dogs. Edited October 5, 2007 by greyladydown
Guest Tenderhearts
My vet has always prescribed the panacur paste for tapeworms in my larger dogs (50+ pounds) and it works. The heartworm preventatives do not protect against tapeworm.

Guest KennelMom
Tapes come from fleas. AFAIK, there's no heartworm preventative that prevents against fleas. I'm surprised your vet seemed a little unsure about the diagnosis. Tapes shed segments that show up in poop and are pretty easily recognizable. I haven't had a dog here w/tapes in so long I've forgotten what we give...drontal/praziquantal IIRC. I dont' neceessarily feel like a bad parent if a pup turns up w/wormies of some kind...grossed out, maybe If you live in the South long enough with dogs, they'll eventually pick them up. Hope Miss Maggie is worm free soon!
