Guest wrldruler
Question to those familiar with how greys run. We're still trying to figure out how George hurt himself yesterday. He was doing zoomies with his sis, was running in the middle of the yard by himself, suddenly comes up limping on his right-front leg. We find his tag collar had been snapped off and he had a nickel size wound on his neck. First thoughts were that he got his collar snagged on something like the fence or picnic table, but that isn't making much sense seeing he was in the middle of the yard. I now think that he got his front paw snagged on his collar during the zoomie, with his nail and/or collar making the wound. Is it anatomically possible for the grey's paw to get snagged in his own collar while running? Thanks, Chris
Batmom
Yep. We use only breakaway collars in the house and fenced yard, for this reason. Guest KennelMom
My first guess would be that it was the tooth/foot of the other dog. Esp on the neck...that's a popular "nipping" spot when greys are running/chasing/playing. eta: break away collars are a great idea. been on my "to order" list for a while now. Guest wrldruler
We bought break-away collars originally, but got rid of them. We found that they broke away **TOO** easily. Everytime they did a zoomie, the force of them running made them drop off. Everytime they were on a walk and got excited and started twisting in their body harness, the collar would fall off. I figured, if they ever ran into an Amber Alert status, I would find the break-away collar at my feet, and them running tagless through the neighborhood. We tried putting tape on the breakaway to make it less breaky, and this worked, but the tape needed to be replaced every few weeks, which was a pain. - Chris
Neighsayer
Was it a tight fitting or loose hanging collar?
Batmom
On Joseph's breakaway, I use a small loop of velcro thru the dees, with the velcro stuck to itself for @ half an inch. The newer breakawaycollar.com collars don't break quite as easily as the older ones. I use ID on the kids' walking collars for walks. Not saying you have to do any of that -- each person has to decide where the greater danger lies for his/her dogs; that's just what we do. I do have some breakaway collars made just with velcro, no buckle, but I used the soft touch velcro and it didn't last well. Regular velcro is tougher. ShantisMom
I never thought about a dog doing it. Might be time to get break away collars. Sadly, my horse did it. He use to scratch his ears like a dog and got his back foot caught in his cribbing collar and for some reason that one did not break. Others did. He strangled himself. Freak accident, but I guess it can happen to all animals. I think I will go check out those collars.... Quote The Girls
Guest sheila
I can't picture how a dog could catch his FRONT paw in his collar. I kind of wonder if there was some original fracas that caused the neck wound and the collar snapping off and a secondary thing that caused the front leg issue. Guest LynnM
When it comes to canine dings, bumps, bruises, breaks and scrapes, ANYTHING is possible. That's why I gave up on obsessing about every little thing. Lynn

LynnM is right.... stuff happens.... you can try to prevent it, but somehow, some totally unforeseen thing will happen: like Diesel vs. The Steps. Have common sense and be careful, but remember that no matter what, sh*t can happen, and just be prepared (i.e. first aid kits are handy to have, etc.). Houndmommy03
It is possible for the foot to get caught in the collar. This happened to our first grey, Lucky. Fortunately I was close by and was able to help her. She was wearing her martingale collar. She also got her mouth caught in it one time. Again, I was nearby. I really need to get my pups tag collars. Kim Quote <p>Kim and the hound - RumorMissing my angels Marlow, Silver, Holly and Lucky
Guest Nik
I have a cat that often comes in wearing his collar as a sash. I still haven't figured out how HE amanages THAT, so I think with a grey, anything is possible.
