Miss Cinnibuns Is Going Bald

:o Miss Cinnibuns has a naked neck (I thought from her Martingale). She also now has a naki butt and belly. Visit to vet 2 weeks ago for annual vaccinations vet thought maybe we should do a thyroid panel. Normal for a grey is 1 and Cinnibuns was at .9. She gave me the option of putting her on medicine but felt it would be just fine if I opted not to put her on meds so no meds for Cinnibuns. She is white w/brindle spots and now looks more polka dot that ever. The vet says throwing pigment is just a part of aging....so I can live with that. Am wondering if anyone else has noticed their hound losing lots of fur - more than normal. I have heard of someone else whose non-grey had the same problem and i diagnosed w/allergies. They stopped all treats and doggie is on medication. Cinnibuns gets NO TREATS and her ONLY food is Natures Receipe Lamb and Rice kibble - one cup thee times daily w/ some rice and other mix-ins....solid pack pumpkin or unsweetened applesauce. We've had lots of problems trying to find the right mix of food that she doesn't :puke AND that gives firm poopies....lots of trouble with diarrhea in the past. Food wise I think we have finally found a good mis. Any comments greatly appreciated. :wubsite

Both my babies have balding/semi-bald necks.... they both have nekkid bellies and thighs too, but now is the time of year that they blow, and I mean, BLOW, their summer coat.

These are typical places for greys to be bald, so I don't worry. :)

How long have you had her?

Shortly after I adopted mine, almost every one of them went bald for several months and then it started to come back in again. Miss Echo, after 2 years of being in our home, is finally starting to grow some fur on her belly and bum.

Atlas took about 3 months to lose his super furry butt and belly and, about another 6 to regrow it. :)

Forever and always missing my "Vowels", Icarus, Atlas, Orion, Uber, and Miss Echo, and Mojito.

Have you had her awhile or is she a new adoptee? How much activity does she get? A lot of times bald butt/belly/etc can be caused by increase in exercise. Especially if they have been off track for a while and started to grow their hair, then get adopted and play/exercise a lot. Cash has the exact same baldness and the vet said because it was pattered (not splottchy) and his temperment hadn't changed it probably wasn't thyroid. He does exercise a lot.

Just a thought...

My JRT/Whippet mix lost his belly hair due to allergies to bermuda grass. I've also heard a staph infection and autoimmune disorders can cause hair loss.

Monty is going as bald as an egg. he has antibiotic resistant staph, allergies, and Cushings.Fooey.

Miss Cinnibuns "Gotcha Day" is Monday, 10/01/07. She never raced due to broken leg but was kept at the Wheeling Adoption Kennel. She gets plenty of exercise between house zoomies, fenced yard zoomies and twice daily walks. She is an only houndie and gets lots of attention. I just wanted to hear diffent opinions to see if I was missing anything or if I should worry. I'm a worrier anyway so just one more thing to think about. Thanks for all your responses.

One of our dogs was suspected of having low thyroid, and was put on meds. Then another vet at the practice said that greys are too often misdiagnosed with thyroid issues. I asked if it was okay to take her off the meds since they didn't seem to be helping (her only symptom was bald butt syndrome), and if the bald butt didn't bother the dog, it didn't bother me. So off the meds she went.

We have since tried Salmon Oil, which I think has done wonders. We squirt the oil in with her food. She hasn't grown back so much fur that it looks like she has a toupe on her butt, but there is a difference, and her fur looks better too.

We get the NutriSea Salmon Oil because it is made locally. They also make some great jerky treats with glucosamine. I'm sure you could find something comparable at your local pet store if you didn't want to order online.
