Guest PetersDad
Good evening everyone.... We just got another update from Peter's vet - she wanted to run a mini blood count tonight just to see how everything was doing - the CBC is scheduled for tomorrow morning. His bilirubin level is down to 30ish from 46, and a couple other liver enzyme levels are down (616 to 389 on the alkaline phosphate(?)), which is another step in the right direction. His pancreas enzyme levels are up a little, from 1600 to 1900, so they are keeping an eye on that, although she said that there is not a huge concern at this point. He's back on fluids and on light dextrose to help regulate his sugar. She said that she was very encouraged to hear that he was trying food again. Fairly good news all around tonight, so he's still fighting like the stubborn boy we know him to be... he's not out of the woods yet, but he's obviously not ready to visit the bridge yet either. We love you Peter! Get better boy! Good night all... Edited September 10, 2007 by PetersDad

Guest PetersDad
Good morning... Peter has taken a turn for the worse overnight. His liver enzymes are down (good), but his kidney enzymes are way up, indicating pretty bad kidney problems. His protein levels also dropped significantly overnight, and he has edema in his hind legs. The vet said that he's not doing very well, and she is very concerned about him. A sonographer (?) is coming in this morning to take a look at him, and that will likely determine the next course of action. She also said that exploratory surgery is an option, but she is afraid that he is too weak to undergo anesthesia. we should have more updates later this morning after the sonographer is done. NeylasMom
I'm so sorry to hear that things have taken a turn for the worse. I second the question regarding OSU. They are not miracle workers, but they have SO much more experience with tough cases like these. Please contact Dr. Couto yourself if you need to. Keep us posted and we'll be wishing your boy well. Guest Tigonie
Oh no. Any news yet on the sonogram? Exploratory surgery? To look for what? It doesn't sound like he's in any state to undergo anything like that, especially since I think it's the liver that metabolizes the anesthesia to remove it from the system, and his liver is already weakened. I'm glad your vet has pretty much ruled that out!! I hope the sonogram proves helpful! I'm assuming the sonographer is a specialist vet, so I think it will be helpful to have his or her evaluation as a second opinion. If they take images, ask for a copy (you can usually do this after the fact, if they didn't offer them at the time of the testing).
Guest spider9174
ditto to contacting OSU. you're not that far away. i know it's a hard call to move your pup, but the hospitals at the vet schools are much better equipped to deal with stuff like this. i know...been there and done that with a horse. you worry that the transport is going to cause problems, be too hard on him/her etc. but after doing it with a horse, i wouldn't think twice about transporting a horse or my pup again in a similar situaiton. since OSU is known for their greyhound vet care, you really can't go wrong. Guest PetersDad
OSU has been contacted. Dr. Myron (not sure if that's how you spell her name, but that's what it sounded like) works in the Greyhound specialty group and has contacted Peter's vet to get a copy of his medical history. She said that she would review the med history with Dr. Cuoto asap and get back with our vet and us. Just waiting to hear from someone... seconds feel like hours... Guest PetersDad
Update from the vet - The sonogram didn't show any liver blockage, so surgery is out of the question at this point. I apologize for not being clear earlier - the surgery would have been an option if the sonogram showed a blocked bile duct, artery, gall bladder issue, etc. His Liver enzymes are way down, but he's not producing protein well, and his kidneys are swollen and his kidney enzymes are still rising. He has edema in his hind legs. The vet said that he is not responding to the antibiotic therapy, and clinically, he appears to be declining. Hopefully OSU will have some ideas...
