Guest crazy4greys
I just picked up a grey tonight from a shelter. They were trying to get his wound to heal, which it did not and they called me to come get him so our group could help him. He will be going to the vet, but in the mean time, any suggestions as to how to help it heal? He is wearing a muzzle with a poop cup to keep him from licking it, which is what he was doing at the shelter. WARNING......... Not for the weak stomach It is on the outside of his knee. Burpdog
I think Marilyn has a few treatments that work I'd start water therapy. 5 minutes 3 times a day or 10 minutes twice a day. Can you make a greyhound legging (in Greyt Information)? Quote Diane & The Senior Gang Burpdog Biscuits

Guest crazy4greys
Can you make a greyhound legging (in Greyt Information)? Thanks, I found it and I will give it a try. Can't quite tell where on him it is? It is on his rear leg on the outside of his knee.
Guest KennelMom
Looks about like what Scout's wound looked like. Not enough skin to stich'er back together so it just healed on it's own. We did water therapy - running clean water over it (IIRC) 2-3 times a day for several minutes. After the water I'd splooch on some bag balm. T-shirt over that to keep her from licking it. It took a couple months but it finally healed over. I remember thinking it would *never* heal. And in the beginning it was v.e.r.y. slow to see any improvement. But, it seemed like once it reached a certain point it healed fairly rapidly. Scroll down to see a pic of Scout for comparison (graphic warning) They stitched it back together the most they could and after this pic was taken a few staples popped out so it grew a bit bigger. Scout's about a 65 lb greyhound.
Guest LadyChester
Collasate (sp?) works wonders to increase the healing.
Batmom
I might be tempted to try SSD (silvasulfadene) on it in between flushing with water. Most important thing tho is probably to keep him from licking it -- no doggy mouths, no disturbance to it other than the gently running water. It actually doesn't look *that* ugly as these things go. Best luck getting it healed up! Guest LynnM
It's well on the way to being healed. It's big, but it's been healing for a while. Time is your best friend. Putting the hose on it will certainly help, as will EMT Gel/Collasate or Cut Heal. Just keep it clean and be patient. The shelter was doing a good job with it. It's healing, it's not infected and the edges look good in the picture. Lynn
Guest LindsaySF
When Teagan had a wound last year, the vet sent me home with a spray can of something.... darned if I remember the name of it though. It was yellowish and would foam on contact. It helped to dry up the wound and to debride the edges. My vet said that the hardest thing is to keep the wound dry, so bacteria won't grow. Don't apply any creams or anything that will hold moisture in, and you have to stop the dog from licking it. All that saliva was probably keeping is moist. A muzzle with a poop cup helps. I also put a t-shirt on Teagan. Good luck! ~Lindsay~

The only thing it does stain fabrics with that yellowish coloring as it's kind of greasy. onrushpam
For wounds like that, I really like Cut Heal, especially the spray. And, dittos on the water therapy. Guest crazy4greys
He is wearing a poop cup with the muzzle. At the shelter he kept licking at it which is why it didn't heal. It has been on going since Aug. 1st when a fistulous tract formed and errupted through the skin. They closed it twice and used a drain to get the fluid out, but I guess he managed to get around the e-collar and keep licking at the wound. Thanks for all the info. I will keep you updated as to how he is doing.

Guest longdogs
It's not so bad. I'd go with through saline flushes a couple of times a day and Betadine spray/spritz. Once it shows signs of scabbing over I'd drop the Betadine. The other thing is exposing the wound to fresh air. I doubt you are covering it anyway. When half the sutures pulled out on Biscuit's wound (about twice the size of Scout's), the vet did recommend using vaseline around the edges of the wound as it was starting to itch as it dried out and granulated. Guest crazy4greys
He has been doing great wearing the muzzle with a poop cup. He has a vet appt. on Monday, but I will start the water therapy since his dog fur is getting stuck in it due to him laying on that side He needs a bath as he has diarrhea dried to his butt, thighs & tail from the shelter where he had diarrhea and was vomiting. He is not vomiting here, but still has the diarrhea.
Guest Mommydog
I'm sure someone posted here a long time ago about using Manuka honey on a similar wound. It could have been shirley, it might be worth PMing her.

Guest heidisue72
My little girl just had a similar wound that has been going on since june 15th. I changed her bandage everyday as well as soaking it. she also was on topical antibiotics and oral. I had to wrap hers with CO-Ban. She did not bother with it much. However, the would not granualize any epithelial tissue so we just went in on tues and had a skin graft and mesh put on it. in two weeks we will know if it is going to take or not. it is on the bend of her back hock. I would just say keep it clean. soak it and put Bacitracin on it with a wrap if you can. good luck. mommy of two greys
onrushpam
I hate to say this, but if it was an open wound, like the one pictured, wrapping with CoBan may have kept it from healing. COLD running water is good and/or flush with diluted Chlorhexiderm, followed by normal saline (you can find a recipe for that via Google). If you need to wrap, get your vet to show you how to do it correctly... a pile of 4x4s, covered lightly with CoBan or similar flex bandage. An old vet-school adage is: "Dilution is the solution to polution!" In other words: flush, flush, flush that wound. Dilute all the bad stuff away...
