Their Predental Bloodwork Is Back

Tanner has a low White Blood Cell count so he needs to be started on anti-b's before Fridays dental.

Norm has an elevated creatinine level. I have to catch a morning pee before Friday and we'll see if he can be done.

I'm heading to the vet's shortly to pick up the anti-b's and I'll ask for a copy of the reports. Maybe the levels are ok for greys??

 

 

Good thoughts please. Of course the vet had to say the low creatinine and liver failure in the same sentenance and the white blood cells because of dental disease so now I'm all freaked out.

Other dog: 6.0 - 17.0

 

Other greyhound CBC changes are less well known. The greyhound's normally low WBC has caused more than one healthy greyhound to undergo a bone marrow biopsy in search of "cancer" or some other cause of the "low WBC."

 

 

Creatinine

Greyhounds: .8 - 1.6

Other dogs: .0 - 1.0

 

Greyhound creatinines run higher than other breeds as a function of their large lean muscle mass. A study at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine found that 80% of retired greyhounds they sampled had creatinine values up to 1.6 times as high as the top of the standard reference range for "other dogs." As a lone finding, an "elevated creatinine" is not indicative of impending kidney failure. If the BUN and urinalysis are normal, so is the "elevated" creatinine.

ETA: Are you sure your vet didn't say *elevated* creatinine and *low* wbc? That seems to be a relatively common misinterpretation of greyhound normal values. If your vet actually said it the other way around as in your original post.... then I'm very puzzled.

WOW! Excellent catch on my confusing the elevated and low. You are correct. Low WBC and elevated Creat.

And the ranges seem within normal for the boys. So I'm wondering, should I start Tanner on the Clavamox that was prescribed?

Never hurts to start the ab's before a dental prophy. Many practices will have you start 3 days ahead of the cleaning

George has elevated creatinine, even for a grey. Repeated urine samples show no sign of any problems with his kidneys, so we're just going to monitor that level, and assume it's normal for HIM.

 

My vet won't do a dental on any cat or dog without giving them antibiotics starting a few days in advance.

 

Standard procedure. Better safe than sorry, eh?

Depends on the condition of the teeth as to whether vets use atbs starting before the dental.
