Chronic Bronchitis

Sally has just been diagnosed with chronic bronchitis. She's 12 1/2yrs and we've had her for just 3 years. She has always been a "mouth breather" and does a hard hacking type cough frequently. Only recently have we noticed that she seems to tire out more easily and pants a lot more. The diagnosis was made from a chest x-ray (with second opinion as well). As soon as our regular Vet returns from vacation we will find out about treatment options.

Just wondering if anyone else has a greyhound with bronchitis and what did you do for treatment?

Was there any determination of if it is viral or bacterial? Has a cardiologist reviewed the

x-rays?

Greyhound angels at the bridge- Casey, Charlie, Maggie, Molly, Renie, Lucy & Teddy. Beagle angels Peanut and Charlie. And to all the 4 legged Bridge souls who have touched my heart, thank you. When a greyhound looks into you eyes it seems they touch your very soul.

As soon as our Vet returns we will have him do further tests (tracheal wash?) to see if it is viral or bacterial. Yes, her x-rays were sent to a cardiologist for a second opinion.

Has she been tested for any of the fungus (don't know what plural of fungus is--fungi?) TBDs?

There have been several greys up in WI that had fungal issues.

Have you emailed Ohio State for an opinion?

Sending prayers!

We also had a CBC panel done at the same time. Her results all came back normal, no sign of TBDs. Can you give me contact info for Ohio State?

Thanks!

CBC will not tell you. Not all dogs have a decreased platelet count or red blood count or increased white blood count. Also, found out something interesting. On a PCR many greys tested postive for e ewingii There is not a test for it specifically re blood draws. I wonder if this is why so many greys test "negative" yet respond to doxy. I have to double check, but I think the group tested was in Iowa. E ewingii is transmitted by the lone star tick. I'll update probably tomorrow as I am going to try & talk with Dr. Holland at Protatek.

My 14 year old Jack Russell was having some chronic bronchitis and not doing very well. I took him to a specialist who diagnosed him with high blood pressure - this was causing problems in his lungs, heart, and eyes. He gets 1/2 a pill every day and is doing great. Has your dog had his blood pressure checked?

Just a thought.

Lexi the pointeresque mutt (1999), Homer the chi mix (2010) and Lacey the ? (2009). Always remembering Dita, Best, Oba, Bubba, and the others at the bridge.

Info about the clinic at UW-Madison with phone number etc. is here: http://vmthpub.vetmed.wisc.edu/about/

When I went, I don't think they were doing appointments on Friday?

Your vet can refer you but doesn't have to. You can just call up, tell them what's going on, and get an appointment.

Thanks for the advise and info regarding Sally. I have made an appt for Sept 4th with our regular vet for consultation. I've also emailed Ohio State for opinion as well. Will keep the info for UW-Madison close at hand.
