Nate Is Going Into Surgery

I need MAJOR prayers and good vibes for my little boy, please.

One of my furbabies is in the hospital. My problem child who’s been sick since the day we got him has been losing weight like it’s his job over the past 2 weeks. We just adopted him June 10, 2006. My husband called me last night while I was visiting my dad in the hospital (he had a major heart attack last week and wasn't supposed to live, but he did, thank GOD!) and said “Nate’s throwing up really bad so you better get home”. We rushed him to the vet and they admitted him. They did a full blood work-up and everything indicated an infection, he was dehydrated so they have him on fluids and also have meds in his IV’s. They did an X-ray on his tummy and it showed lots of fluids. He didn’t eat all day so they don’t know where the fluid is coming from. They were going to do a sonogram this morning to see more because the fluid distorted the x-ray, but the mobile sonogram machine can't get here until tomorrow and he's too sick to transport to another vet. The vet did a chest x-ray to be sure nothing is pressing on his lungs because he pants a lot and wakes up during the night short of breath. That x-ray showed nothing, so at least that's good.

The only other option is a very risky exploratory surgery and then I would have to make a decision to not wake him up if they found anything. They're going to start surgery around 2:00. I’m going to visit with him at noon. He told me to “be prepared” and asked us to make a decision on what to do if they found inoperable problems during surgery. We've decided that it would be best for Nate to put him to sleep on the table.

He's not even 4-years old yet. I really can’t take this after losing one of my babies just a year ago.

He's at our regular vet. We're about 3 hours from Ohio State and were going to take him but there just isn't time right now as he needs to be started on immediately. Our other specialist we use could see him but their internist is out until tomorrow so he would just see a regular doctor anyway and we're more comfortable with his regular doctor, just in case the worst turns out he's already at home.

They've tried to aspirate the fluid and it keeps build up as fast as they remove it. That's why the doctors are so worried.

I read through a lot of these threads last night and kept coming back to Gino's story from last year and I didn't sleep a wink. I do not have good feelings about this at all. :(

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers, I sure hope they work.

I just got back from sitting with Nate before they take him in. He looks so sad, which is nothing new, but it kills me knowing how horrible this may be.

I asked the vet "best case scenario" and he replied "maybe he ate something and there's a blockage" - which I know didn't happen. He really thinks it's a tumor or maybe a perforated intestine. He's had intestinal issues from day-one that we've been treating and now I feel like such a failure because we didn't do enough.

I told Nate that he came into our lives when we needed him most and he can't leave us now. He just can't.
