You may want to talk to the Vet about adding Neurotin to his meds. Generic name is Gabapentin. It's suppose to be good for nerve pain.

Another vote for a chiropractic and/or acupuncturist. Would be even better if you found one vet that did both.

Your story sounds like my Effee. I never noticed that she couldn't move her head to the left very well.....but I did start to notice when she stopped shaking herself and stretching. Then she started limping on a front leg. So DH took her to our traditional vet, I told Dh that the vet would most likely give three options - pulled muscle; nerve pinch; or cancer. Okay, I had a gut feeling it wasn't cancer. So while Dh was at the traditional vet, I called a chiropractic vet, that also does acupuncture and chinese medicine. She could she Effee immediately. Called Dh, and told him to book it to the chiropractor. That first appt, the first of about 4 or 5, was WONDERFUL. She definitely said that Effee had had this stiffness for a long time and basically it had just built and built upon itself until it was manifesting in her not shaking herself and limping. After the adjustments and acupuncturist, I swear that Effee is a healthier 10 year old than she was a 6 year old. It is that amazing! I still use our traditional vet (and in fact our chiropractic vet is also a licensed veterinarian, which if you're going to practive chiropracty in Missouri, you either have to practice WITH a licensed vet or be one yourself) but will always use Pat for chiropracty/acupuncture and basic alternative medicine.

I am a huge believer in treating the disease/problem and not the symptoms. Treating Effee's problems with NSAIDs/Rimadyl/Dermamaxx would have just masked her pain and not solved the problems.

thanks for the suggestions. I'm waiting for a call back from the specialist for a time. may be quite a wait though, especially since it's summer. I'll look into the holistic vets fromliz though.

Thanks.

Feel better Oscar, we're sending our thoughts and prayers to you. :hope Hopefully you can get into the specialist soon. I'm a real believer in acupuncture as well, once you know what you're dealing with. It did wonderful things with my two fifteen year old big seniors.

We're looking good.

Oscar's been on the Rimadyl for four days now and there's a significant improvement. He bounces around the house just like before. He can't walk far and still cant go beyond the middle of our crescent without freezing and then his nose dripping. :-( But, he's a lot more comfortable, I think. I've been in contact with Dr. Couto and he gave me some suggestions, which I will present to the vet next week.

We're holding off on the MRI right now because the cost vs benefit isn't there. Three vets have told me that the MRI might not show anything so I'd rather use the money to get him seen by an osteopath instead. I looked into the holistic and accupuncture, but there isn't anything available in my area, unfortunately. The closest is on Ottawa, which is over a 2 hour drive away. Not impossible, if it's needed though.

In my opinion, the improvement with the anti-inflammatory lowers the possibility of this being a nerve sheath tumour.

Thanks for all the positive thoughts.
