Hobbes Is Doing Poorly - Advice Needed

Recommended Posts

With Boggles, Marilyn had to change the protein source many times. There was a period where rabbit worked, then venison, etc. Have you emailed her? She has a lot of experience.

Hi...i'm sorry...i am still quite new at this but do have a friend who is struggling with a new IBD diagnosis with one of her hounds.... This may sound incredibly dumb but who is Marilyn, and, is there away for her to be contacted through GreyTalk?

Thanks!

Sami

Some dogs can not handle Pred for various reasons and with some dogs with IBD is just plain doesn't help. That was the case with my IBD dog. The only drug that helped him was a drug called Budesonide. It is is steroid like pred however, the lovely thing about it is it pretty much stays in the GI tract therefore you don't get all the side affects that pred causes. It really was a lifesaver in my dogs case. He was taking 3mgs a day but, has been weaned down to an every other day dose and we are hoping to reduce his dosage further as his blood work is perfect and his stools are normal again. Is so not an overnight "cure"---it took about a year to get him back on track but, w/o the Budesonide I know in my heart I would have lost him to this disease. Feel free to PM me if I can help further. :colgate

Hi Sami- I tried to send you a message but it didn't get thru. If you send me a personal message I'll give you the information Marilyn passed on to me regarding IBD.

The budesonide that tbhounds suggested is the generic name for the the Entocort EC I mentioned I'm taking. It has given me my life back; I've needed to have a bathroom handy for the last several years. After one month on the budesonide, I feel healthy again and 20 years younger. I had forgotten how it feels to feel good!

Do let Hobbes try it if nothing else has worked so far. It worked on me in maybe 3 days. It's so worth it!

Marcia in CT, to be in SC in 3 weeks; wahoo! :)

Hi Mary...thanks for the offer of help. I tried to send you a message and an email through your profile, but, i can't seem to do either. I'm still kind of new, maybe i need more posts? Can i post my email address to this page for you to send me the info? I know my friend would be greytful for anything i can offer her, she is at her wits'end with her poor big boy.

Thanks again, for all the help!

I had a long visit with our vet today and gave her all the information from this thread. She has been speaking to a specialist and she feels there is great merit to Probiotics, Propectalin and the other remedies. New stool samples have been sent to a nearby University for testing and on Thursday blood will be drawn to determine if Hobbes has a maladsorption or maldigestive problem rather than just the IBD. The Probiotics have to ordered but he will probably start this on Thursday and whatever other supportive remedy she has chosen.

It will continue to be one-step-at a time for Hobbes. This morning I gave him some mashed potatoes mixed with a little pumpkin along with his ZD diet and tonight his explosive diarrhea has turned to a "pulpy mash". A big improvement and he seems so much more content. As the Pumpkin has worked for him in the past and it seems there are more than just food allergies at work here, it is a safer alternative to stick with until we work the issues out.

We took him for a long ride tonight (one of his favorite things to do) where he could stand at the window with the wind blowing in his face or stretch out next to Fiona in the back of our Jeep just enjoying the motion of the car. He had his usual Hobbes grin on his face and seemed very pleased with himself.

Thanks for all your suggetions and good thoughts. Hopefully we are on the right track to get this condition under control and return this sweet senior to better health.

Hi Mary...i just realized that you started this thread....i answered your email and was rude not to mention i have my fingers crossed and are sending white light and prayers to Hobbes, too. I was telling my friend Joan (whose big boy is ill with IBD as well) about him this morning and she said her prayers are with you as well.

Here's hoping he continues to do well and improves each and everyday. He has a wonderfully dedicated mom!

Hugs and Prayers...

Sami & My Sweet Dear Starla :hope:candle

I just thought of something that works well for problem diarrhea if all else fails: a tablespoon of cooked cream of rice. It's really potent. Might even start with a teaspoon.
