LadyBailey
I saw this article and thought I would share: --- From www.hendersonvillenews.com May 12. 2007 9:52PM Animal advocate memorialized with dogwood Millicent Smith worked diligently with greyhound rescue organizations and tirelessly acted on behalf of the animals. The Hendersonville resident realized her strong bonds with animals of all kinds from childhood, which lead her to get involved. Smith was especially involved with the plight of the retired racing greyhounds, realizing that those who didn't find homes would be disposed of after they had raced their hearts out for their owners/trainers, said friend Peggy Brann. "Millicent gave so much of her heart and life to greyhounds and their people, gave without thinking for one moment what the personal or financial cost would be," Brann said. "There was always a way for Millicent." Eight years ago, Smith had a desire to do something so that all greyhounds could get together and have fun. She set out on a mission to provide a place for the hounds to run and socialize out of harm's way, Brann said. She orchestrated an agreement with the Fletcher Parks and Recreation Department to use a baseball field at Fletcher Community Park eight months a year. Strong friendships have resulted in these weekly meetings, and each year new greyhounds join in the fun, Brann said. "Imaging Technologies of Asheville was so impressed with this humane effort that they created and donated a beautiful banner which is proudly displayed every Saturday at the park," Brann said. Smith discovered in 2006 that she had terminal cancer. She died March 18, just one month away from her 51st birthday. "Following the funeral, her many friends and their greyhounds gathered at her home in Hendersonville to pay final tribute to this remarkable woman," Brann said. "We could think of no better way to honor Millicent than to plant a tree in her memory at Fletcher Park. No other tree would do for a native North Carolinian than the official state flower, complete with the word "dog" in it." A red dogwood tree was planted at 10 a.m. Saturday. "We would like to think that Millicent and her greyhounds will always be present when we have our fun run," Brann said.

Wouldn't it be amazing if that was the same day that this lucky cat ended up in Hendersonville, as published on the BBC News Front Page website yesterday? Quote Xavi the galgo and Peter the cat.
