Guest jordansmom
Jordan had been having diarrhea/vomiting all day Sunday. We didn't feed her due to the diarrhea but gave her plenty of water. We were going to take her to the vet on Monday anyway if she didn't get better. She didn't get better. She got worse. Much worse. Her crying woke us up at 3 am this morning. We had crated her because she was so restless, and crating has calmed her down in the past when she has been sick. I went into the living room to check on her and saw her crate splashed with bright red, bloody vomit in several places. I took her out back to use the potty, while DH called the emergent care vet clinic for advice. She had EXPLOSIVE, liquid diarrhea and was very weak getting up and down the steps. Aaron and I drove her to the vet ER as soon as she got done pottying, and she was admitted to the vet hospital this morning at about 4:30 am. I just called the hospital for an update and got the diagnosis of HGE over the phone. She is still in the hospital as I write this. Does anybody have any experience with HGE?? Please pray for us! Guest jordansmom
HGE is hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Symptoms are bloody diarrhea and/or vomiting with lethargy and elevated hematocrit. Untreated dogs have a high mortality rate from this disease, which can result in hypovolemic shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) if left untreated. DIC can still happen in treated dogs too. The cause or causes of HGE are unknown. Thanks for the prayers!

romansperson
Is Jordan a recent addition to your family? I ask because our JC was diagnosed with HGE about a year after we got him by an ER vet. That diagnosis was WRONG. I called our adoption rep after taking him to the ER, and she said they should check for hookworms. Turns out that's what it was. He was still a sick pup, but once we knew what was wrong and it got treated he got much better pretty quickly.
Guest jade1046
We just went through what you're experiencing about three weeks ago with our Felicia. Unfortunately there was not a definitive diagnosis and we lost her. The necropsy revealed a ruptured tumor in the small intestine which was not visible on the ultrasound (probably because it had already burst by the time they did the tests) and lab analysis indicated she had developed septic peritonitis and DIC. If they haven't already done so, ask your vet to do an ultrasound - that was the first indication that there was something seriously wrong with Felicia, i.e. fluid in the abdomen. I pray that this has been caught in time and that Jordan will pull through with treatment. From what I've read about GHE, it can be treated successfully. Wishing you all the best. Guest jordansmom
Thanks everybody for your thoughts, prayers, and well-wishes! Romansperson, what you wrote is definitely food for thought. We have only had Jordan for about a year also. She IS on Interceptor, so I'm thinking that a hookworm infection is not likely. I'll have the vet check just in case. Jade1046, I agree with you 100%, and the vet has said that she's going to do an abdominal ultrasound on Jordan if she is not better by tonight. No, I haven't called my adoption group, but I'll definitely let them know. I'll keep y'all posted! Penny

silverfish
Renie had HGE at the end of a stay in kennels. Looking at the floor of the kennel, which had been cleaned a couple of hours earlier, I was afraid I was going to lose her because there were several piles of stinky, bloody mush, impossible to tell which end they came from. She looked terrible, but she began to improve very, very quickly and recovered completely within a week. It has never recurred. We figured she must have had a bad tin of food. Her companion, kennelled in the same unit with her, was Jim - who was old and frail at the time, and I was terrified that if he got it, we WOULD lose him, but he didn't ever show the faintest sign, not even the runs. I'm hoping that the same will go for Jordan - that she'll pull through quickly and recover completely.
