I just got word moments ago that Emily's greyhound Sailor died suddenly this morning. He was 7 yrs old. A cause has not been disclosed. The family was home with him.

I never imagined I would be writing this now… I thought I would be telling him to get off the couch for at least three more years. After all ten is a very conservative life span for Greyhounds, right? I bought spiked training pads to keep him off the couch… oh the irony… to see my handsome black boy curled up in the pillows or to hear him jump to the floor as soon as he detects footsteps coming down the stairs. He is in the backyard now, in his favorite sunning spot just off the patio. Jim told me he looks south and is comfortably curled up in a soft blanket with his stuffed woodchuck. I wanted to bury him with his favorite toy horse but his sister Sophie found it and started to ‘squeak’ it. Sophie should have it, she will miss him.

Only three hours had lapsed between the time I found him this morning and when Dr. Beth told us it was time to let him go. I came downstairs to see my husband off but the smell led me to the living room. I hate to share the details, to describe a majestic creature in such a pitiful state but I knew then that something was terribly wrong. Jim took him to the vet, I thought he would cry when moved so I had to leave. Jim tells me now that it was painless. We thought he had a chance after the initial examination but the specialist quickly diagnosed a brain lesion. A tumor? A stroke? We will never know.

Sailor was my first dog. He was big and goofy. I always joked that he would sell his soul for a hotdog. When shy Sophie came to live with us and demanded endless hours of trust-building and affection he never complained. He attended meet and greets and visited an old-folks home. There are one thousand adjectives to describe Sailor but to sum it up he was ‘my special guy’, I know you all know what that means.

Sailor turned seven last month. Our daughter was born in January so the petting and kisses were far and few between for the last couple of months. I feel terrible about that. It was quick but I always thought we would have a few more years with him. I know also that too many of you have felt what I feel now and it really hurts.

Oh Emily, I'm so very sorry for your loss of Sailor. Gosh, I remember him running in the back yard when we brought back the trailor you so graciously lent us to take supplies down to the Katrina victims. He was a very special boy indeed. Godspeed Sailor.

I remember when I met Emily...we sat in the sand out in one of the turn out pens & talked about Bool, my black greyhound who had just died. Emily is a very gracious young lady...her empathy for my pain has stayed in my memory & the way she softly said I am so sorry for your loss...

Now it is my turn to tell her, Emily...I am so sorry for your loss of Sailor. I know your pain so well.

Its hard to see through the tears right now that Sailor is no longer in any pain. He is running & playing or napping & dreaming, where he is now. I am positive that he has caught up with Bool, Pegasus & Mr. Threat...they are wagging all over, playing games & having treats whenever they want to.

There is no pain, no sickness where they are. They nap on fluffy clouds, awaken to birds singing, being cooled by the breeze created by butterflies. Their days are filled with fun & rainbows.

Whenever your heart hurts alittle...remember its just Sailor nestling in your heart. His memory is with you forever.

Hilda
