Spam On Greytalk

Recommended Posts

We take some elaborate measures to limit the amount of Spam that makes it through and gets posted on Greytalk.

Many hours are spent weekly updating and configuring filters and such. For the most part, Greytalk remains spam free. Many other forums with open registrations get hammered with spam.

On the ones that do slip through, please DO NOT reply to them as some of you are doing. Just quietly click the p_report.gif button located under the post, and let the moderators take it from there. If you do not see the p_report.gif button, that means someone else already notified the staff, just keep browsing as normal and we will take care of the issue.

I have other ideas for the future of how we can make it even harder for spam to hit the forum, it should all be seamless to users.

Thank you B)

Cool! Do any of the other ideas involve a virtual wiffle bat of sorts? :POed

I did not see the "report" button as you mentioned, so someone must have already done so. In a few forums I moderate, the administrators have created a program that looks for the word "spam"(as a someone replies to the OP), then flags the thread, locks it and moves it to the mods forum for us to decide if we want to delete it or keep it, all of this is done automatically. That's one reason people type the word spam, but it's good to know you have a report button also.

that is a neat idea too. Probably cheaper to have something like that coded then what I had planned.

I don't understand how you can manage this. My website gets loads of garbage and it just a losing battle.

I do a lot of reverse DNS's to get ranges from the IP addresses being used and we run IP denies on them - even so - it is just so daunting a task.

This board is clean - any advice you've got would be a big help.

you really need to batten down the server, something you need a dedicated server for. We use black lists among a range of other things. If you have the access you need, it can be a winning battle, at least so far for us it is not too bad. It should be better in the near future as well. If we get 1 per day, that is too many in my book.

You could teach the folks at my workplace a thing or two about fending off spam. I swear, if I get one more email telling me that my (nonexistent) "schlong" isn't big enough...

Oy vey.

Good job, Jeff and the mods.

Well, obviously they are correct in sending those emails to you then... if you don't have one, it isn't big enough :lol

I used to get tons of those at an old job along with some porn as well (which I think the guy I managed signed me up for... we didn't mesh well)

True, true. :lol Guess those spammers are too smart for me! :P Today, I got one talking about a "small johnson." I like how they avoid getting caught in the filters like that with all the synonyms for a... ya know, a "willy".

Thank you for your greyt work establishing and maintaining this very informative and useful site. Being new member of this community I can appreciate your contribution to the friends of greyhounds.

mainly from the remote images people post, like your geocities signature image. Greytalk itself stores a single cookie, it keeps you logged in, and helps display the new posts indicator. That is pretty much it, everything else comes from remote images.
