Street Waltz (walter) 5/13/96-11/15/06

It's taken me almost two weeks to write this. Walter has gone to the

bridge.

Diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 8 weeks to the day we had to take him in. The

tumor had grown immensely on his front leg and he was in so much pain. I

gave thanks on Thanksgiving that he was no longer in pain.

For those of you who never met him, he was a huge, lovable, lug of a

Greyhound who never met a stranger. Actually, he introduced himself to

strangers, often while they were not looking. He'd lean on the back of the

legs of people shopping for other things at Petsmart during booths, and

would move from one admirer to the other for hours. Booths were what he

lived for. He even made friends with a man in Moses Lake on a road trip by

peeing on his shoe.

I was able to take him to Abilene in 2004, where he was purchased by the

Casalinos of Colorado, and raced in that great state. Evelyn Casalino

mentioned that he was one of her husband's favorite dogs, always coming to

his side when he was working in the kennel. He carried that love of people

on to his retired life, first with another family, then with mine.

I extend thanks to everyone who has played a part in getting Walter to me.

Originally, we had gone with our small dog to meet Oregon (now Karen's Rico)

who tried to eat her (literally. Moira walked him in to the store on his

back legs...mmm snacks!!). Walter had just been returned and after a

cursory sniff, he and Sophie ignored each other. A love match. :)

Thanks also to our friends who helped out at his last booth in November

(Tanis and David, Bev, Julia and Kevin, for letting Walter rest during the

booth, and Maryanne and Marblehead--thank you for stopping by). I had to

get him out in public one last time. He was exhausted after that, but he

was so happy.

Even during the flood on 11/7, he was a goofball. I had let Walter and Rosy

out to potty on the one small patch of grass that had appeared after the

waters started to recede, he took off around the side of the house into the

2 foot deep water like he was going to swim the channel. Then gave me his

goofy grin as he came back to the deck after deciding it was a little too

cold.

The snow today prompted me to write. Walter loved the snow, perhaps from

being raced in Colorado. He would run in the snow, burying his nose then

flipping the snow in the air and catching it. I will miss that forever.

There is a very large hole in our hearts and our home. It's so quiet here

now.

Run free, big guy.

We love and miss you.

I am so sorry. Walter was a beautiful boy. I just don't understand why so many of our beautiful dogs fall prey to OS. It scares me.

Run free of pain, Walter...
