  1. This year at The Solvang Gathering I was offered the chance to photograph inside the Veteran Memorial Hall where the vendors are, rather than at a garden at one of the hotels where I have done mini-sessions in years past. This required a small investment in studio equipment: a more powerful flash, background stands, and a roll of seamless paper. This was my first time offering studio-like sessions at an event. I practiced off-camera flash several times off-and-on in the weeks leading up to the event. To keep myself from being too overwhelmed with too many new things all at once, I went with a bare minimum light setup: a single light stand, one flash, one light modifier. I also did tethered capturing (camera connected to laptop to import directly into my photo software) for the very first time. Tethered capture was a learning and valuable experience, but one big advantage was that I could see my results immediately and adjust exposure settings on-the-fly, so I'll be doing it again in the future. Ellie was my first client on Friday. After taking a few test shots I got this image of this dark brindle girl. I'm very pleased how her mini-session came out.
  2. A couple of weeks ago in Solvang at the 11th West Coast Greyhound Gathering, Bean ran in her first Solvang Streak. Here are a few pictures I got of her run. Playing with the lure: Running the Streak: At 17 months of age she won the racing silk for being the youngest dog to run. Her mom Cranberry would've been proud.
  3. Several weeks ago I asked out loud on the GreySave FB page if any of the GreySave six puppies were attending the 10th annual West Coast Greyhound Gathering in Solvang, CA. As i had missed out on visiting them when they were small, I wanted to photograph them individually and in a group picture. Five of the six live in CA, three of them (I think) in SoCal. If you remember back to last summer there was a puppy webcam set up next to their whelping box so everyone could watch them grow. Born last May, they are now nine months old. It turned out that five of the six made it to Solvang (the sixth pup could not go due to liver issues). As an added bonus, Carlee, their mom, also made the trip. So on Saturday afternoon there was a mom-and-puppy reunion of sorts in the Royal Copenhagen Inn's Secret Garden at the back of the hotel property. When I went down the stairs from our second-floor hotel room to go to the garden, there was a line of people following the pups' owners. I hadn't expected that. Here are pictures of the pups and of their mother, Carlee. Nancy Drew: Dolcetto: Carl: Romeo: Simon: Mama Carlee: and a group picture: (From left to right: Carlee, Nancy Drew, Romeo, Dolcetto, Simon, and Carl.) it was a lot of fun for me to see the pups and their mother for the first time. i hadn't realized how many people knew of them.
