Hey everyone, about 6 months ago we adopted two beautiful sisters "Winnie" and "Luna" - ex racers and 2 years old at the time. They both came to us with a ton of health issues and in a pretty bad way. They had be treated horribly. Luna had a serious UTI, ear infection and some other bits and pieces, all of which has healed and she is living her best life now. Winnie on the other hand came with a ton of stuff and has stayed in bad health, even with us literally throwing everything at it. I thought i'd list some symptoms going on with the hope someone has some info or advise: Her worst symptom is SEVERE crusty sore paws/nose( what we think is hyperkeratosis) It heals and then comes back (ears have fully healed now) She has had infected anal glands (they got expressed) She has red paws from licking Smells yeasty at times Loss of hair on her belly Severe skin irritations from grass (itchy and flakey) She did have growths (they have healed now) Struggles with heat (pants even with a little heat) Fairly lethargic Moody Her poo seems to clump together a bit before exiting at times (seems to be better on this diet) She did fart a ton but has stopped since the new food We thought it was steming from a really bad immune system so we have literally thrown everything at that - Her fur is like silk now, eyes are bright and teeth are white so something is helping in some area. We have tried a ton of different creams none have done much. We think she might have an allergy to chicken too so have stopped that. We have her on two immune boosters, vit c, tripe for the zinc, hemp oil, coconut oil, a pet naturopaths food diet. Any help would be rad, Jonny

Hi everyone, I know this is not the nicest of topics but I have a question and would like some advice. Billy had his glands expressed at the vet yesterday after they were full and irritated and seems to be doing great since. However, this evening, he had a very small amount of leakage and he was quite distressed. My partner (used to be a dog groomer so had a little knowledge) cooled his butt down with some damp tissue and he seemed better. She then checked his glands to see if there was an issue but she found that they seemed fine. My question is, is it normal to have a small leak after having hem expressed or should we go back to the vet? Thanks in advance! Ryan

Hi All! I adopted my greyhound, Bubba, in Dec 2016. Since around October 2017, he has been excessively licking his bottom when I'm not watching him or at work. I took him to a few different vets and heard everything from possible growth to just sore from licking. They expressed his anal glands and said they needed to be expressed at the time but I am growing tired of these large vet bills. He is now on Hill's prescription I/D digestive care food, a dollop of canned pumpkin and I give him pumpkin ginger chews as treats now instead of milkbones. His poop is fine and he has a normal appetite, sometimes skips a meal here and there but usually scarfs down at least two cups a day. Nothing has changed since October- what could this be?? I looked under his tail tonight and the lump was licked red and had a bit of bruising on it. It's a small lump perfectly above his anus and at the base of the tail. There was a slight fishy smell and it looked like yellow (leftover poo/discharge?) something around his anus. Also, at the beginning of January, he has started peeing in the house. He has been very housebroken and I am gone almost 9 hours each day and he never had accidents. We have a set schedule that has worked for him. They are very small spots and sometimes multiple spots. Today when I got home, there were many small spots on the carpet. I took him to the vet for a possible UTI and the lab results/urinalysis was fine. She said we could X-ray for kidney stones but I have spent over $1000 on vet bills already to figure out what might be wrong. I'm absolutely desperate between these two issues. He is my best friend in the world and all I really have; I will do anything to help him get better but I'm at a loss right now. Any advice is so appreciated.

Lola's been having mild problems emptying her anal glands. The vet taught me how to express the glands so that's not a problem. However, rather than put poor Lola through this uncomfortable procedure so often, I've been researching a more natural approach. Dietary changes helped a bit but she still has a problem emptying. I've just ordered a supplement called "Scoot Ease" from www.entirelypets.com. It's a chewable that contains pumpkin, psyllium husk, salmon oil and other good stuff. Just thought I'd share with my GT family.

My 10-ish year old galgo has had recurring anal gland problems (one side gets infected, one side gets impacted). Due to a combination of her very high stress levels at the vet, and her tiny anal gland ducts, she needs to be fully sedated (asleep) to have them properly expressed. It super sucks. So, I thought, might as well just operate, have them removed, and never worry about it again. I was committed to surgery, until I was talking with the vet who was going to do the operation, and he says that it might be allergies, and a diet change might resolve her issues. Key word being "might". Now I'm on the fence again... It would be great to avoid surgery, but if the diet change doesn't work, then I'm looking at surgery anyway, and she isn't getting any younger. So, has anyone had luck treating anal gland issues with diet changes? How long until you notice an improvement? She's been doing very well on her raw for years (chicken and beef) with a turkey/salmon/duck mix kibble when I'm in a rush. She also gets a variety of supplements including salmon oil, which I read in some other posts caused problems for other dogs.
