Does anyone have any recommendations for topical itch relief sprays or creams? For background- Ivor has been nibbling and scratching at his skin for the last few months (it started when he was shedding in the spring) He had a lot of dandruff while shedding so we upped his grooming and added sardines and coconut oil to his diet, and that cleared up the dry skin. However he still seems to be itching a little, and now has some thinning hair on one thigh and his tail. I'm a bit confused because most of his coat is lovely and shiny and his skin isn't dry or broken anywhere, just a little pink all over. The vet said it was probably a mild allergy to pollen or similar and tried steroids and apoquel, neither made a very marked difference so we've stopped all for now. I think maybe he just needs something to soothe the skin a little, but there are a LOT of options out there, so any recommendations are appreciated!

Yes, my new grey from Birmingham has hookworms. I am following the vets protocol for chronic hookworm because they returned after the initial treatment. That is not my question - but it is relevant because we have a lot of Panacur doses ahead of us in the coming months. My problem involves the Panacur causing extreme itching (a known side effect) in my hound. She was up all night licking and biting herself. I finally gave her a Benadryl at 1 am, and then another this morning at 7 am. Those have seemed to help for a while. Does anyone have experience with this side effect and any advice? I have contacted the rescue and they have contacted the vet to see what they suggest - but in the meantime I thought I would see if anyone else has had the problem and has any suggestions. Thx.

Edge has been itchy since he adoption over a year ago. He doesn't seem crazy with it but itches from time to time and he chews around his back. We can pull little brown hard specks off that area but have seen no fleas. I have a cat that has no fleas and there are no bites on us. Would a flea bath help him? Is it another skin condition? Anyone know? Thanks.

Hello all, I am a new owner and member with a few questions about my hound. As soon as I brought Veggie home back in March I noticed some itching, shedding, and dandruff, but I thought that would die down after shedding season had passed and she settled into her new home. Even though she was vetted prior to her adoption, I took her to my vet after a week to get her vaccinations on record and get a wellness check. During her visit my vet suggested 50mg of Benadryl twice a day to help with the itching and she claimed the dandruff would stop when the itching/shedding stopped. It has now been two moths and I haven't seen much improvement. She no longer has bald spots due to the scratching, but she still needs Benadryl 3-4 times per week despite daily brushing and weekly wipe downs. I have noticed that the itchiness is worse right after I apply her flea and tick medication. Yesterday Veggie got brushed, was thoroughly wiped down with water, and was then given her flea/tick/heart worm meds. She was up the rest of the night scratching, pacing, tossing, and turning. I gave her 50mg of Benadryl last night and this morning and it hasn't seemed to help. I am now concerned about the cause of these skin issues. I suspect that her flea and tick meds are causing some irritation, but what other options are out there? Are there more effective methods or products to relieve her symptoms? Thanks for any input!

Hi everyone, Saliva stains on Winnie's face are driving me nuts. As much as I try to keep her cheeks reasonably clean, those brown, sticky stains will just not go away. I understand this is due to some kind of red yeast growth related to the particular chemistry of some dogs' saliva, and hence must be connected to the dog's diet. I feed Winnie Blue Buffalo grain free dry food (Freedom or Wilderness), which is supposed to be one of the best (and pricey) dog food out there, but I was wondering if the heavy yeast growth might be in some way connected to that food. Sometimes Winnie also starts scratching and biting herself like crazy, but I'm not sure if this is just behavioral or allergic (and maybe yeast related?). Apart from that, she eats very well, always begs for more, gets 1 capsule of wild salmon oil and 3mg of melatonin a day, hoping it will eventually help with her very bald butt, tummy and throat. Also, any new advice on how to get rid of those annoying stains? I've had some moderate success with a mix of peroxide, baking soda and corn starch, but I'd need to torture her with that every other day to keep her reasonably clean. Apple cider vinegar in her water does not seem to make any difference. I'm unwilling to give her any antibiotic to fix this problem. I know this is (apparently) only a cosmetic issue, but I'm uncomfortable with the idea of yeast growing on my girl's face!
