  1. Glad everything's ok. I worried myself sick one time when Sobe kept making hacking noises, and his toungue hung out of his mouth for hours...but he acted fine. Then - I caught him snapping at bees in the yard. I think he caught a bee and it stung his tongue. He was fine, but it drove me crazy until I figured it out!
  2. I agree with the rest - more excercise is probably the cause.. These dogs fluctuate weight so quickly! Silly note - if you now have a yard - why do you need poop bags? Get a shovel and a trash can! Just kidding.... My dogs have mostly free-access to the yard (when we're home) and they seem to poo more than leash-walked dogs.... cuz ???? But it's very little poo's mostly. A bounce foster came back to us a bit on the heavy side.... he'd been leash-walked only, with issues, and not as much as maybe he should.... anyway... within a couple weeks of being here with yard access, he dropped weight like a stone!!! He went from heavy, to almost too skinny and I increased his food - in less than two weeks. Just from yard play and mult-poo! It doesn't seem possible that just "that" can change the weight... but I believe it.
  3. If the e-collar works, I'd say use it. Also, wrapping the feet in socks and vet wrap.
  4. I think it also depends on where on the body the scar is. I see lots of dogs with little scars on their legs, not much hair there. I've seen my dogs get scars (at home from running into things) on shoulders, especially, and they seem to cover with hair eventually. Now to that one, I can give you a definate "Perhaps" I've seen it go both ways. I've also seen a hairy-butt go to a bald-butt post-adoption.
  5. Hi from (probably) the northern-most Nittany family! Welcome to GT. Freckles is lovely! Hope to meet you at an event sometime!
  6. Light colored, or lightly haired tushies can definately sunburn.
  7. Good thoughts to you and sweet Dreamer! I know nothing about blood levels, so I have nothing to offer but my very best wishes for you guys. Sobe (black) minds the heat terribly. I think it's even harder here in the north, where we not used to heat every day. Once he gets acclimated, he'll be fine, but the 50 degree temp changes in 12 hours are heck on animals and humans. Frost in the morning, then 90 in the afternoon?!?!?!?!?! I don't know whether to wear a coat or a bikini! Good ideas about the cool coats and using the wipies. Maybe do the pads of his feet with a cool wipe too, that's a good place to release heat, in addition to what you're already doing. Hopefully, it's just a fluke combination of a hot day, and not being accustomed to it, that goofed up his bloodwork.
  8. I'd say more like vermicelli. Gak! I Don't think it's a hookworm. You can't see them. Either tapes or rounds. Gak! But it can be treated. Been there, done that. Gak!
  9. I agree with the averages. I think Sobe is "biggish" but not huge. He raced at 78 lb, and is about 83 at pet weight, and he's really broad, his hipbones are 2" wider than many greys. Diana is an "average" female at 55 lb. Sobe had a "decent" career. Not outstanding, but he raced until he was 4. Diana, well... never was attentive enough to race (I'm NOT surprised). I think it's more about talent, than size.
  10. I only got to see Charm and Mac a couple of times, but NEVER has a greyhound had a more wonderful (if short) life with her adopters. Bohemain Charm- a wonderful dog, with wonderful people. Hugs to you and Lynn and Mac. I'm glad you came back to GT, I wasn't sure if you would.
  11. Check the belly, crotch, tail area, and armpits. You'll see them if they're there. Either little black jumping fleas or "flea dirt" little black specks. Bites on the forehead are probably NOT flea bites. Your dog would be itching like a maniac before you saw bumps on the head. And, I've never actually seen a "bite mark" from a flea. You always see the fleas, but very seldom their bite marks. She probably stuck her head into a bush or something. Or got bit by a spider, or stung by a bee. But- this is the time of year to start using Frontline Plus, or Advantage, or some other flea-repellant. A flea infestation is NOT a fun thing to deal with. They can get into your carpets, and it's a bear to get rid of them.
  12. Excellent reminder. Especially for those of us who's dogs are NOT in "racing shape" anymore, and get a bit too ambitious when the weather gets warm.
  13. Welcome to PA!!!! In addition to the others mentioned, Nittany Greyhounds is also a PA group. We cover all of PA plus. And anyone, with any group, is welcome at any evert or M&G, or whatever. Please PM me if you'd like.
  14. Thank you for this post. I think many of us are naive (spelling?) about what CAN happen . I would like to make the point that greyhounds are NOT more viscious- or mean- - or whatever- than most other dogs. Their scuffles just SHOW more, because of their thin skin. I was at a friend's house this evening, and she told me about her basset and pit-mix "getting into it" for no reason. Biting, growing, snarling, attacking! And they've lived together for 2 years. Afterward- they were FINE. My comment: "Be happy they weren't greyhounds- you'd be at the vet getting stitches." My 2 greys got into a tussle a couple weeks ago. NOT running. In the house. There were stitches needed. BUT- they're FINE together. Even the same day as the tussle. The hurt one didn't even know he was hurt (and I think he started it- sleep aggression.) So- my point- not sure exactly- ..... stuff happens. Be smart if you have a pack...and take appropriate precautions...but even with less than a pack...stuff happens. Don't beat yourself up about it. We can't prevent every scuffle.
